: Spend $ on new car or spend $ to make chevelle daily driveable
Joe Y Sep 9th, 99, 12:38 PM I just got a big move/promotion last week so the first thing that came to my head is what I need to do to my chevelle. I'm going to buy a 2 door but first I need to finish this one up. Should I make my 4 door chevelle an updated daily driver or buy a new car (after 1990) to handle long distance chores. I'm thinking I'd like to add fuel injection + 200r4 or 700r4. I don't think I'll be putting out that much horse in this car (300-350) and I won't put on slicks (haha) so I thought a cheaper 200r4 could handle the chores. Or I could buy a small fuel injected front wheel peice of something and drive that daily. Please comments suggestions, been there done that help extremely appreciated.

That decision is completely up to you. I love driving my Chevelle and I drive it work every chance I get. You could get a POS for driving, but will you be happy with it? Is it going to be dependable? Up to you. Personally, I'd opt for the Chevelle as a daily driver. I'd save some money by keeping a carburated engine in the 4 door and put a few goodies under the hood to boost the performance a bit. Do whatcha wanna and good luck doin' it!

Joe Y Sep 9th, 99, 1:47 PM Well, I need something that I can drive long distance if needed. I don't know how much fuel injection does for economy verses the initial price. I usually drive 3 hrs on the highway over the weekend so I want my chevelle to be able to do this without refilling every 20 minutes. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I want this car to be as reliable as a new car, I want to be able to drive this anywhere without worrying about it breaking down or breaking my wallet dry.

chev-hell Sep 9th, 99, 2:01 PM i just put in a 2004-r and love the fuel economy went from 3000 at 70mph to 1800 with a 3.08 rear end so you may check your rear before using it, or beef up the engine to compensate. also ezier to convert and cheaper than a 700r4 jk

SoCalRat Sep 9th, 99, 4:17 PM A guy I met at a car show put the Edelbrock fuel inj. into his 69 Malibu & said he got 25 mpg on the freeway. As to the choice...it's up to you. You can buy a Geo Metro and get 30 mpg+ & risk the chance of getting killed, but it gets good gas mileage http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Hope this helps.

dab67 Sep 9th, 99, 6:10 PM sell the 4 door, buy you a 95,96 impala to drive, then find you a 2 door to put your money in. that`s what I`d do.

Joe,
I bought a 1987 Buick regal to use as a daily driver and even though it ran great I could not stand driving a V6. I upgraded to a 87 Monte SS and still wish I could find a decent 68 Malibu to use daily. I commute 60 miles a day so I am thinking a SBC with a 200r4 would be just fine. Since I don't use my AC in the Monte very often the Malibu could be without also. My 2 cents.......

tom3 Sep 10th, 99, 6:04 AM I'd go for anything that would keep me away from the car dealers, sales or service. The old Chevelle should be as dependable as anything on the road if maintained, and much cheaper to maintain. Still, a pre OBDII Camaro would be nice. tom
steve stanbach Sep 11th, 99, 4:10 PM Fix up the four door. Whats with this talk about fuel injection? A properly set up carb will work just as well as fuel injection. The trick to making a carb work is retaining the heat stove and stock air cleaner.
Joe Y Sep 11th, 99, 11:17 PM Heat stove? That's for warming the air up for winter right? I'm going to use this as a non winter daily driver. The malibu is afraid of snow. Why would I need to keep the stock air cleaner? The stock one was for a 2 bbl rochester on my 307. I don't think I'd waiste money on a fuel injection when for $2000 I could get a 400 HP 383 long block. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

SirVette Sep 12th, 99, 8:42 AM In the north, I think we found snow about a foot deep at best, people starred at the Vette much longer than usual watching us all the time in sight, as if they expected me to get stuck or have trouble.
The other guys advice for other more recent rear drives is great. I don't like a front driver.

SirVette,

Likely they were wondering why you are driving a Vette in the snow with all the salt they dump on those roads.
I mean dude, cars are meant to be driven, but there was a reason someone designed a TRUCK.

There was no salt on these roads.
The Corvette has a fiberglass body.
There are no rust holes anywhere frame or body.
You may want to learn something, or maybe not.
