: Shroud for my 65 El Camino
My 65 gets hot in traffic. I have a 350/350, no fan shroud, a 26 in. radiator, flex fan, and 4 in. space between radiator and fan. I know the overheating pb is due to bad airflow, as the engine cools down pretty fast after I get moving. I want to get a shroud, an better, a CHEAP one. I am not looking at keeping the car stock (...well, you might have guessed since I already have a wrong engine/tranny combo). I want a shroud that I can buy and install easily. Has anybody tried a shroud for a different model / different year?
Thanks
JWagner Feb 22nd, 00, 8:39 PM Take some measurements from your car and go to a salvage yard and measure the fan shrouds there. It it is pretty easy to make some acceptable brackets to fit a shroud to your car. I have done this with good results.
Steve R Feb 22nd, 00, 11:04 PM Not all flex fans are created aqually. Make sure you have a good one, the $20 ones are junk. I had one on my Camaro, it overheated even in 70 degree weather, after I installed a good quality one I never had a problem again. You are running a thermostat, right?

mr409 Feb 23rd, 00, 5:39 AM Why not just get a fan shroud from a 65?
On that flex fan deal, get rid of it! The life you save may be your own.
Here's a pic of what can happen with those $20.00 stainless steel fans.

Doug Garland Feb 23rd, 00, 6:04 AM Bob, a factory fan shroud for a '65 is a hard to find item. They are metal, and most of the time they are long gone from the car. They best bet is finding something close, and modifying it to fit. Same goes for the metal spacer that fits between the radiator and the cradle. If it's gone, it's very hard to find.

WayneK Feb 23rd, 00, 6:38 AM As said B-4 64/65 stell fan shrods are RARE
The SBC V8s used a 4in rad spacer between the rad and rad support. this brought the fan closer to the rad. With this and a GOOD
big bladed flex fan helped me on my cooling
problem on my 65 ELCamino. Might look in to the new repo shrods that are coming out ?

Rich-L79 Feb 23rd, 00, 7:55 AM I have tons of radiator spacers from 1-3 inches lying around and I might have a fan shroud too.
Lose the flex fan and get a stock style solid fan or clutch fan (make sure the clutch is good). The HP improvement with a flex fan is questionable and they do a really poor job of cooling at slow speeds.
E-mail me at home (I'm at work now) and I'll see what kind of radiator spacers and fan shrouds I have lying around. The stuff is all 65 Chevelle stuff of course.

mr409 Feb 23rd, 00, 2:24 PM I learned something new.
I'll have to keep an eye out for them. There's a few 65's in the junk yards near me.
The full size Chevy used a metal shroud too. I wonder if they are the same?
I know the 348/409 shrouds are worth their weight in gold.

Jerry Acheson Feb 23rd, 00, 6:06 PM The shroud on a '64 was only available on air conditioned cars or high performance 327's. I think it's the same on '65. The shroud is only about an inch deep and is much smaller than the Impala shroud. The previous posts are correct, the shroud is hard to find. Good luck.

Thanks to all,
I might just follow JWagner's advice and try to get a shroud that I can make fit at the salvage yard. Other option is Ausley's $73.50 shroud, but that's a steep price for a piece of plastic. I am trying to build an El Cheapo, and am only willing to spend money where I think it is worth it. Now, regarding the flex fan, I clearly learnt a few things. I really enjoyed the pic with the blade halfway through the hood...As soon as the week is over, I'll check and make sure my fan is no junk.
