Fellows: The upholstery guy came and got the front seat out of my 71SS today. The springs in this seat are worn out. Sitting on it is like sitting in a hole. You seem to be driving uphill all the time. I need some quick advice on how to firm these existing springs up. New springs for bench seats are unavailable. I need your help fast and thanks.

What do you mean springs for bench seats are unavailable?????
ANY upholstery shop worth an ounce of salt will have generic springs that they can cut and install to replace the old broken ones on your seat...
The shop i go to has a huge ROLL of seat springs- he just cuts off what he needs and uses it.
If your upholstery guy doesn't know how to replace springs- You would be well advised to find a better shop.

Thanks for the advise. I certainly didn't know this and appreciate your response. I had asked this question twice previously on this forum with only one response-that being from a experienced upholstery guy who did not tell me about the use of generic springs, but did give me some good ideas. Thanks for the help.

No problem...
Most likely you have some broken or streched out springs, That along with worn out backing material(burlap) it is allowing you to sink down as if you are in a hole.
They should be fairly easy to replace & fix just the broken or streched springs. If they are reupholstering your seat, they should be re-doing the burlap backing stuff anyway.
I think my guy charged me something like $7 /per spring to fix them on the last set of bucket seats he did for me. Bench should be about the same. He used this padding stuff similar to carpet underlay(but thinner) to replace the trashed burlap... I have seen other people use canvas to replace it too...

Got the seats back and they look great. Better yet, it sits like a new car-very firm. The upholsterer weaved some sort of material through the old springs and this firmed them up real well. No more sitting in a hole and driving uphill.

next time just get any A body bench seat. There all the same and no one will be able to tell the difference. Oh yes there are springs (repo)that can be gotten. But it sounds like your guy came through and good traveling to you.
