: Inner fender A arm seal installation
hoffman Feb 22nd, 00, 5:54 AM Can any one give me some info on installing new A arm rubber seals to the steel inner fenders on my 70 SS 396. Mine were already removed when I got the car. Do the rubber seals overlap the steel on the engine compartment side or the wheel side ?? How many staples should there be in each seal ?? Do the staples pointed ends bend over on the rubber or the steel side ??
thanls for the help
Gary
72chevelle350TH350 Feb 22nd, 00, 7:15 AM My covers are removed also, BUT The staples are still there. By looking at the remaining staples it's obvious that the rubber will over-lap on the inside of the fender. Likewise the staples will drive towards the tire. *Please wait on others replies if this is for a show-type restoration!
As for the number of staples. I can check later, if no-one replies.
Gary, my 70 Chevelle assembly manual shows them stapled to the engine side of the inner fender. Staples towards the tire. If you do not have a repop inner, just look for the staple holes. I got new staples from Harmon's at a swap meet.
If you have a repop, the least of your worries will be just drilling new holes to staple them on. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif I had a repop L inner and the holes had to be elongated so much to bolt on it would have been better to weld the hole up and drill a new one. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

Bob70 Feb 22nd, 00, 9:44 AM I actually was ready to post the same question! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I have plastic inner fenders in my 70 and bought new flaps to replace the original tattered ones. They do overlap the fender just outside the hole. My question is how to staple them in. My new flaps came with staples and I'm not sure how to install them other than pounding them in with a hammer and bending back the points with a pair of pliers, but that doesn't seem like the correct way to do it.

The dust shields are attached on the wheel side, staples go through the engine side and bent outwards on the rubber. Mine are original and have never been removed. Not sure the amount of staples, I'll have to count them and let you know.

RickS Feb 22nd, 00, 3:20 PM There were several posts on this a few weeks ago and the suggestion was made to use paperclips rather than the staples since the staples are a b$!*# to bend. Obviously not the way to go if it's a show restoration but otherwise probably the thing to do (that's what I'm doing) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

richr is right. The seals go under the wheel well, and the staples go in from engine side. I have replaced lots of these, all with the staples.Clean out the holes with a little drill bit, then use needle nose and they should go right in.Then just tap the ends over.

hoffman Feb 22nd, 00, 5:09 PM I appreciate all the response so far but there seems to be two different opinions, rubber overlaps the steel on the wheel or engine side. Any second opinions on that ? Mine are steel if that makes a difference. The one reply said the staples should be bent outward, not in like a normal staple in paper, is that correct ?
thanks
Gary
Rick Cell Feb 22nd, 00, 6:11 PM Gary depending where your car was built the seals were not all installed the same. On the Atlanta built cars the seals are put on the tire side and the staples are also put on the tire side and bent closed on the engine side.I researched this and have pictures of an original 9000 mile car and that is the way they are installed.
richr Feb 23rd, 00, 5:29 AM Hoffman,
If you'd like I can e-mail you a picture of mine, as I said before they are original, have never been changed or removed. I will be replacing them on my car this summer. The wheel wells on my car are steel. This by the way is my third Chevelle and all of them had the seals as mine are now. Most Chevelles I have seen are with the seal on the tire side and the staples pushed through on the engine side, in fact I do not recall seeing it any other way unless someone installed it that way. Hope this helps.
If you would like a pic - emial me and I will send one.

I also think it varied by factory. I saw MoeMan's original untouched '69 Malibu (bought by his grandmother) which was assembled in Fremont. It had the seals on the engine side. I used 18 ga galvanized floral stem wire per a tip from Gilbert Probst, and pre-drilled the holes in new steel inners. I installed the seals on the tire side because it looks better.

Bob70 Feb 23rd, 00, 1:55 PM My dust shields were the originals when I removed them last fall and the shields were placed on the engine side and the staples went through and were bent on the tire side. My staples were bent the same way a stapler would staple paper. I just couldn't figure out how they got the staples in there. It looked like they were done with some kind of staple gun, because the holes are too small to have been drilled.
