I got a consloe for my 71 Chevelle last X-mas and I finally got some bucket seats (not stock) and finally rebuilt an engine for it, so now Im planning on finishing my interior now. My question is: the console doesnt seem to fit to well as far as on the transmission tunnel and so forth, any ideas it just doesnt seem to fit at all, do i need to cut out the carpet under it or what? Thanks a lot

If it is a Chevelle console you need the proper shifter assly. for the middle mounts and an add-in bracket for the rear mount. On mine I cut the carpet, underlayer, and tarpaper for the front mount and there is still a space at the lower front edge between the console and carpet.

My first question would be, if you didnt have a console in their before, how did you know where to mount the console mount? Give us some measurements and maybe picture, then we can evaluate. Dont get irate before you assess the problem.....
You can absolutely use an aftermarket shifter as I have posted pics of mine here before, just takes a little bit more measuring, fitting......

If the car didn't have a console and you want to add a console, the hump/tunnel in the floor/sheet metal has to be changed. The original sheet metal on the floor is the wrong shape for a man shifter with console. Ground-Up sells the correct humps/tunnel to do this conversion right. You will have to cut out the old hump and re-weld the new one for a man shifter with console...
Below is a link to the tunnel you need...

you need to weld a rear console bracket to the floor.

If you do a search you will find a very well written and photographed article by James Hinshaw on console installation. It is basically a step by step thing. I tried to find it but I last noticed it maybe a year or so ago. I know Dean (previous poster on this thread) has made reference to that post in the past. Maybe if you ask him he can provide you with the link?
