My 30 year old speedo lens is getting pretty opaque and the numbers are kind of fading. I was planning on taking the lenses out and polishing them with 1500 to 2000 grit paper. Is that going to be fine enough paper, or is there another easier way of doing a better job? And while the lenses are out, is there a good way to do a reasonable job of re-coloring those numbers, and letters? Lots of thanks for the help!!!!

You might want to try plastic polish instead.

DON'T use sandpaper. No matter how fine the grit, it will ruin your lenses. Use plastic polish or, as I did, use a scratch remover for clear coat finishes that says it can also be used on plastic. I used "Kit Scratch Out" available at auto parts stores. It got most of the fine scratches out but some deeper ones remain. It will take some time. von

As far as re-coloring the numbers/letters - good luck! I tried this on a '70 sweep speedo. The numbers are silk-screened on and if you touch them, they will come off. I accidentally brushed mine and that is why I was trying to recolor them. I tried the finest paint pen I could find - and it did not even come close to looking good. Maybe if you are a talented artist with a hand steadier then mine you will have better luck. Fortunately, I have a spare speedo that I will be using.

As far as the numbers I don't know, but, I have hneard that you can get the plastic to shine again by using clear model paint. Testors is the brand name. I have never tried this but I heard that it works. this
clear paint covers over thwe scratches and looks clear again. You might try it on something disposable first.
