Burn in on rebuilt engine cut short due to extreme header heat. (Hooker ceramics) Are they really supposed to glow cherry red? What do you guys recommend for high temp. wires and/or sleeves to protect from heat? Has anyone ever shielded air conditioning housing from header tubes? I'm running a stock distrib. (non-HEI)

Are you sure you timing is correct? Sounds like it is a little retarded. They should not get that hot.

Eric, this happened to me years back and I finally discovered my carb's primary jets were much too lean for the new motor. Also, make sure the timing isn't too far retarded.

Without knowing your engine or header size, your headers may be too big. There was a thread some time back that discussed this phenomena. I don't recall the particulars, but you might try a search.

You guys were right! I set the timing accurately and the temp problem went right away. I had tried to take the engine to high RPM for break-in as fast as possible without setting the timing with a light. It runs really well now. Thanks for the help.
