Looking for a shop that can restore the dash housing in my '68 chevelle, including rechroming. Any recommendations ?

Thanks,

I used American Plastic Chrome in Romulus, MI, 1-734-721-1967. They did an excellent job on my '69 housing. It was $95 + $10 shipping to Indy area. That is just chroming, no painting. They'll paint it ,too, for another $130 (approx.). von

Von,

I need my '68 done too, but it has some cracks around some of the screw holes. Can the American guys fix those? Did you paint your own? If so, is it that hard to get the paint off the raised letters and ridges? I heard to use Plasticote paint, and remove the excess with laquer thinner.....

gibbons; I didn't ask them about fixing any cracks. I plan to fix cracks with 2 part epoxy glue. I am getting ready to paint mine soon. APC says use Krylon semi-flat spray paint and 3M easy-release masking tape. I'm going to try applying a small amount of vaseline to mask, them wipe paint off masked areas when paint is mostly dry. I'll let you know how it works. von

Kent and Gibbons,
I painted my rechromed dash as I described above. If I had it to do again I would try the easy release masking tape. I've been told regular masking tape will pull the chrome off when removed. The problem with masking with vaseline applied with Q-tip, is that when you remove the paint from the chrome,( with fingernail or plastic tool) it pulls some the adjacent paint with it. I had to carefully score the edges with a razor blade first (tedious). The vaseline masking works good on the lettering for wiper, etc. I have some touch up to do. Also, the Krylon semi-flat is a little too flat, I think. I would try Rustoleum satin. It has a little more gloss. Experiment on the back of the dash piece with masking and paint. One more thing. Apply paint with several light coats or it will fisheye. von
