I have a new starter that came with a crate motor. My old starter had 3 terminals on it, BATT , S and R. One wire to S one to R and two to the big BATT terminal (This is a points ignition). New starter has two terminals (HEI ignition MSD 6AL , Blaster coil and billet distributor). Right now I have two wires going to the BATT terminal and the R wire going to the small terminal. ACC and IGN work but starter doesn't turn. When I remove the R wire and replace it with the S wire, the starter turns over with ignition in off position. I thought I needed to remove one of the wires when converting to HEI ? I'm sure it's not as complicated as I make it sound but could someone out there help me out with the wiring so I can get this thing fired up before the cylinders turn green ?

Ray, I only use two wires on my set-up. The big wire from the battery goes to the large terminal on the stater,"hard to mess that up, right." The other wire, "should be purple," goes to the small terminal that is close to the block. This you can use a test light to find. Hook up the light to the wire ground the light. Turn the key to start, if the light comes on you have the correct one. Maybe someone else can go into futher detail. Good Luck, Rick..

Rick is right hook the purple wire to the "s" term and the brown wire is no longer needed with the HEI. If the starter is turning over all the time you have another problem. Somehow you are applying 12v to the "s" terminal.

Ray I have a similar set up. MSD 6A, billet distributor, and a new mini starter that I had trouble wiring in. My starter only had two places for wires. The big term for the batt. connection. The purple definately needs to go on the solenoid. Then I had a white wire left. I hooked it to a ignition source, and that cured all my problems. SSGUTH

The r stands for radio, you really don't need this wire, it is used for radio interfance. Your probelm is that you mixed up the wires put the two smaller wires to together on the s terminal. The big wire should be a red 10 guage. This should cure your probelms

I got it working now. There is a wire connected directly to the + terminal along with the battery cable. I don't know where it terminates but it's the only way I can get it to work. The wires look fairly new so perhaps the wiring is not OEM. Anyway, thanks for all the help. I'm gonna try and wake up the neighbors Saturday morning with the BB cam break in. Thanks again,
