I wondered how the factory dipped frames. That's alot of paint I figured. An old factory guy told me they had a pool of water and poured paint into it. Since they don't mix the paint floats to the surface. You can dip paint your coils springs and what ever else just like the factory did at home in the back yard. Get a container deep enough to emerse your part in and fill it almost to the top with water. Pour some paint in. It should float to the surface of the water. Hang your part on a wire and slowly dip it though the paint into the water and then pull it back out and hang it on something. It will drip alot so don't do it on your patio. I hang them from a tree branch or a frame so they drip on the grass. Experiment with different kinds of paints to find out what works for you. I used rustoleumn semi black. Even spray can paint works!
Good Luck,
Roger

Sound like a neat idea! Will the paint cover immediately, or can the water get under the paint? I was thinking about sand blasted parts, maybe it's safer to spray a primer on them first? By the way, I remember my wife showing me this trick in a Martha Stewart magazine. Pour paint on top of water in a container just like you said, but use a couple of different colors. This will create a swivel pattern, which could be used on, for example, easter eggs. So how about creating a psychedelic car by dipping all your parts in paint? :D

The part never gets wet with water just paint. You dip the part in slowly to make sure the paint sticks to it and doesn't allow water to touch it. I used this method for painting my coil springs.

Cool! That should save tons of paint, compared to spraying. Spraying things like coil springs is a terrible waste of paint, 5% on the springs, the rest on the floor, the walls, in your hair etc, and you always miss a spot ot two anyway :D Thanks for the tip, I'll try that next time!
