Turning down your dash lights to the point where you can still read them will improve your night vision on dark roads. Try it.

That's true, however I've discovered that it increases the problem of being 'blinded' by oncoming lights, so it's a bit of a trade off.

Drove a squad car for over 20 years, you'll be surprised how much better you night vision is. It's so simple, your eyes adjust to the light on the road, not your dash lights.
