I have a 1969 SS-396. The number on the block is T0203JK. I noticed on the protecto plate a number that is T0916JK. I guess this means that it is not a matching numbers engine, but the engine did come from an SS-396 Chevelle??
Thanks for any info.

KKey, right under the T0203JK you should have some numbers. The last six numbers should match the last six numbers of your vin#. If you have a TH400 go to the opposite side of the transmission ID plate and close to the pan you should see the transmission vin#. Again, the last six numbers should match the last six numbers of the Vin #. You should be able to find out if you have the original trans.

Another thing to double-check is that the VIN on the protect-o-plate matches the VIN on the car. There's always the possibility that its the p-o-p, and not the motor, thats been switched.

Thanks for the info. The POP is the original one. There is no Vin # by the numbers I mentioned above. The engine was built in Feb '69 and the car was built in October '68. With no other numbers on it could it be a dealer warranty block???

If it were a warranty block. it would b a CE (counter xchange) suffiix block, with the date xchange took place, dealer doing xhange code, engine code and last 6 of VIN, L89SEDAN
