Well, I have no idea what's wrong with it, but my fuel gauge doesn't want to work on my 71 Malibu. Needless to say I'm pissed off now and I've already died once. Any suggestions would help.

Cheetah015, The fuel gauge works off grounding. Make sure the ground strap from the frame to the sending unit are clean. and where the wire to the gauge connects. Fuel gauge problems is many times no more than dirty connectors. Bob J.

This is a classic no ground scenario - it has happened to me that the ground wire connector had rusted at the frame point, likely above the axle (not sure). My 2¢

If the guage stays pinned past full, it is very possible that the orange (or tan?) wire coming from your sender (Not the ground from the plate) is shorted to ground. I have purposely grounded this wire to test the function of the fuel guage; if it pins out past full while grouded, the guage and related wiring checks out ok and the problem is most likely ground. If it is pinning past full, check to make sure the sender wire isn't shorted somewhere. It sounds like that is most likely your problem; good luck!
