: 71 Hemi Cuda ragtop fetches $400,000???
Rainer Dec 5th, 99, 5:19 PM I know its not a Chevelle, but it sure is interesting nevertheless. I just caught a piece of this story on the local news, so I may not have it all correct. Seems the car was offered in a drug seizure auction in Seattle, and it sold for $400,000. Anyone else have more details? Didn't they only make like two of these things?

DZAUTO Dec 5th, 99, 9:20 PM I am not in that income bracket, but if I were, I would pay the price for a genuine, documented HEMI car. And I would also pay the price for a genuine, documented 427 Cobra. But I don't make that kind of income. I know these are not Chev, or even GM products, but they are among leaders of the bygone muscle car era that will never return. Stuff like GTOs, Road Runners and Z/28s are, essentially, a dime a dozen. But not HEMI cars or 427 Cobras. Real ones.
Although, if I did make that kind of money, first, I would buy a P-51! Nothing sounds like a Harley and nothing sounds like a Merlin!

SS396ELKY Dec 5th, 99, 9:54 PM No I didn't see the local news in Seattle, I live in Cali...ha ha Well the truth is I don't watch TV because I don't have one. Well I have one but it is not hooked up to cable or anything. I've been without TV for over 3 years now. I'll rent a movie now and then.
Yes I could see paying for something like that. Do I have the money? NO
I saw a ZL-1 Camaro at a Super Chevy with a 4 sale sign in the window. All the zeros and commas made me cringe.....
I posted a thread the other day, a guy put for sale ad in the paper, $89k for a 70 LS-6 Convertible Chevelle.
I guess that is what we build and collect thing for. Hoping that some day it will bring a price or to simply say "I GOT ONE".

Tom Mobley Dec 5th, 99, 11:27 PM I live in Phoenix, but my Mom lives near Everett, couple weeks ago they ran a story in their local paper about this car, it was seized as part of a drug raid. There was a nice picture, it is a blue convertible, 1 of 1 Hemi Cuda converts made in 71. Also partially visible in the shot is a red early StingRay, red El Camino, something else in the back but I can't make it out.
Apparently the cops got pissed off at the stinking dopers when when the started selling openly across the street from the local high school. May they rot in jail forever. Took the cops two years to find the car after the original bust, they knew the guys had it but it was stashed in an out of town storage unit.
Tom (the artcle was from about 2-3 weeks ago, mentions that the cops were expecting bids in the $250K range, what a nice surprise for them, $400K.....)
DZAUTO Dec 6th, 99, 5:00 AM Along with the 69 1969 ZL-1 Camaros, there were 2 1969 ZL-1 Corvettes built. One of those 2, for sure, still lives. It was seized in a drug bust and auctioned. I don't remember the price, but it was equally high for that time.

IgnitionMan Dec 6th, 99, 12:08 PM Considering that there are affluent and rich Japanese executives who would pay double this reported selling price for the car, I can see where a speculator would pay that price, just to sell it to the Japanese buyer. Just think about all that moolah in your own off-shore bank account. NICE.
The average two bedroom apartment in greater Tokyo, without parking, in a high-rize, 1600 sqare feet, is about TWO MILLION dollars, american dollars. Serious steep bank for a place that is a crackerbox on the 43rd floor and no parking. And, there are long waiting lists for them.
I'd love being the real estate broker for all those apartments.

Chevy454 Dec 6th, 99, 2:42 PM DZ:
One of the '69 ZL-1 Corvettes is owned by Roger Judski, who just happens to own Roger's Corvette Center in Maitland (Orlando), FL. Along with the yellow ZL-1 'Vette, he owns several other rare Corvettes, both old and new, and most are extremely low mileage unrestored examples. The last time I talked with him, he also owned matching L-88 Corvettes: a '67 and a '68.
Anyway, here's the URL: www.rogerscorvette.com/ (http://www.rogerscorvette.com/)
This is the main page, but if you will click on the Corvette spotlight, then you can check out some pictures of the rare cars he owns. The L-88 pictures can be found on the What's New page, under the heading "Roger's Personal Corvette Collection on Display".
Believe me, if you are into muscle cars, then you should check out this page!!!!

The guy that owned Zip Products is Wayne Walker. He was second owner of my black LS6. I remember he had a ZL1 vette that they did a big article years ago ( don"t remember where) Not sure if he still has it. But they say it was 1 of 2 cars built.

It's good to see that we can still get our little "jabs" in, and still be adults about it! Keep up the good work!
What would Roger's ZL-1 Corvette be worth? Any guesses?

DZAUTO Dec 6th, 99, 6:32 PM Then that is probably the 2nd car. According to Chev records, only 2 ZL-1 Vettes were made. Even though they are not Chevelles, I wonder how many of the 69 1969 ZL-1 Camaros are alive and well?
A documented (and I mean really documented), matching number, non-butchered ZL-1 Camaro has to be in the low to mid 6 figure $$$ range. Even if the original block was replaced because it was blown, as long as what's left still exists with the numbers on it.

That Reggie Jackson bought that Cuda...... He also has a ZL-1 Camaro and a few Yenkos. I read an article on him and his car collection. 15 of his most valueable car were toasted in a fire a few years back. Maybe the Insurance $$$$$ paid for the Cuda.

1970 SS454 Dec 7th, 99, 7:35 AM I read that the Zip products ZL-1 vette was sold a number of years ago to a collector in N.J. I'll try to dig something up.
[This message has been edited by 1970 SS454 (edited 12-07-99).]
joe58 Dec 7th, 99, 2:25 PM The second ZL1 was white with a black stripe and was in the Otis Chandler collection but may have changed hands since then.
I read that there were 6 ZL1's built. Two sold to the public. Two were test mules used by Chevy and may have been distroyed when the testing was done. The last two were converted to L88's and sold.
One of the test mule ZL1's was set up for drag racing. With slicks and headers, the TH400 ZL1 ran in the 10's. The other mule was set-up for road racing. heres a cool link http://www.corvette-autos.com/zl1.htm
DZAUTO Dec 7th, 99, 5:24 PM Joe,
That very well may be true. All the info that I have only shows what was sold, which was only 2. In the good old days, there is no way of knowing what was built for R&D, flogged and then destroyed. A few years ago at the Okla State fair, there was a Chev exibit which included an El Camino based on the Caprice/Impala SS body WITH TRUE DUAL EXHAUST, 2 CONVERTERS! But this car was never released for sale. At a Super Chevy event back in 86 or 87, a Chev engineer brought a Monte Carlo Aero Coupe (NASCAR roof line) that had a 350/5sp. GOD! I wanted that car!

DZAUTO Dec 7th, 99, 7:14 PM Clint,
For sure if I had a P-51, ONE WAY OR THE OTHER I would get the maintenance done. DR Brent Hisey, a neuro surgeon here in Okla City that owns MISS AMERICA-a racing P-51, gives rides-------------------$500 a pop, 30min. And his mechanic is a retired AF mechanic. If Dr Hisey would let me, I would volunteer my time to wrench on it.
