: Front license plate
Keith Tedford Sep 16th, 99, 2:53 PM A friend just got a $105 fine for having a heart beat license on the front of his Corvette instead of the proper one. In Ontario, Canada, at least, you can run all your Harleys with straight pipes and rods without fenders but use your proper plate out front. Perhaps the cop just doesn't like nice cars.
66 bowtie Sep 16th, 99, 5:19 PM I know what you mean not bout lisense plates but one day driving dads truck i was givin ticked for craked windsheild, it wasn't even in the line of vision but the cop was mad so she busted me with anything she could. i am in ontario too and somethings people get away with is stupid must have conections with cops i think. one guy around my place has some bike with no exaust and he never gets stoped. law isn't fair!!!

I have a very loud harley, never get stopped, just back off when I see a cop.If you need a front plate by law,it must be there.be like putting a usa-1 plate on the rear of my chevelle, and the state plate on the front, would not take long till I was busted.I think 3 things come into play, the cops mood,If he made it with the waitress, and luck! good day, dudes 67rat member #199
Canuck64ss Sep 17th, 99, 5:40 AM I think every Province and State should forget the front plate! It would save on the cost of having them made and maybe keep some tax dollars for better things.
There are a few places that don't have a front plate and I envy those folks.

71velle Sep 17th, 99, 7:10 AM I have been running without my front tag for about 10 years and haven't been busted for it yet. (Knock on wood) I keep it under the rear floor mat.
69SSDropTop Sep 18th, 99, 11:25 PM Here in Michigan you don't need a front plate. They also let you regsister old plates from the year your car was made (as long as it's over 25 years old). And there regsistered to your car for as long as you own it, you never have to renew them. So I found a set of 69 plates at a swap meet for $8.00, sent the state my $35.00 to regsister them to my car, and I now got 1969 plates on my 69 Chevelle convertible. And yes, I even put the front one on.

smokin454 Nov 6th, 99, 1:28 PM My father has a 98 vette and doesnt put the front plate on it cause it looks terrible. In Texas we need one but he just keeps it in the back in case. He has been stopped for minor warnings, but never the plate. I took the front plate off my chevelle to see how it looked and found that it looks better with it on. Oh well.

Scooter Nov 7th, 99, 8:43 AM In Minnesota, if you have "Collector" plates, you only need a rear one. Collector plates can only be issued for a car that is 25 years old, can only be driven to and from shows, and is not a daily driver or only registered auto. I have 3 cars with them.
My wife's 98 Grand Prix GT has a neat looking cover on the front where the plate goes that say's "Pontiac". I never put the front plate on because it looked good with that Pontiac cover there. Her friend's daughter used the car for her driving test and they failed her because the car didn't have a front plate. So I put the darn thing on it. She went back a week later for the test and passed. The dumb plate is still there, looks Ugly!!
I used to live in Michigan, and wish the front plate was cancelled in all states, and Canada!

Pat Kelley Nov 7th, 99, 9:50 AM In Los Angles a fellow was killed by the cops for not having a front license plate! Well, not actually. A cop tried to stop him for not have the plate and he took off. After a high speed chase, he was shot and killed. They never did figure out why he ran. No warrants or anything else, the car wasn't stolen.

IgnitionMan Jan 2nd, 00, 10:59 AM I live in the greater L.A. area, and never run a front plate. I keep it in a pocket in the driver's door panel, and put it up on the dash when the cop gets out of his or her car to "investigate". I tell them that I have the proper bracket on order at my local Chevy store and am waiting for it to come in. Works every time.
I understand from a friend in Florida, that commercial trucks can fun only one state issued plate if they want, and it can be in the front if they prefer.
MalibuJerry350 Jan 2nd, 00, 12:23 PM Here in NJ, a front plate is required. AND with all the cops and state troopers we have here, you can bet you'll be stopped if you don't have one. Our state inspection sticker used to be on the right side of the windshield, but they changed it to the left driver's side so a cop could see it better as he approached your vehicle from the opposite direction. I've seen them station troopers at the entrance toll booths of the Garden State Parkway to check on expired inspection stickers! The only year my 70 Malibu didn't wear a front plate was 1976 when we were "allowed" to display a special bicentenial plate instead. Ah, yes, living in NJ! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

No front plate necessary in Kansas unless you have a personalized plate.
A few years ago my wife got rearended by a hit and run driver which totaled out her parents old LTD. A few days later someone was looking at the car and noticed a perfect impression of a Missouri tag number in the dirt on the back bumper.
They had alrady cought the kids anyway when they showed up at the hospital and the police had pieces picked up at the scene that matched missing parts of the Camaro.
Good thing she had a dirty bumper http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

it is law in CA, i have a few friends who have been busted for no front plate. it just gives a cop an excuse to stop you and then he can look for more violations at his leisure

DaveK Jan 5th, 00, 9:39 AM I concur with Ken. It is a law in California. I've got a friend with a Camaro that got a ticket for not having one.

Byfield Jan 5th, 00, 12:23 PM Law in Wisconsin as well. They issue 2 plates, and you're required to use both.
As far as 'fake' plates, like the Chevy logo or the HEartbeat plates, These are technically not allowed on the front of the car, but in most cases, they'll ignore it. The exception is when you use them instead of the actual front license plate. The'll get you nailed. Most people just mount them (fakes) under the real plate.
Kurt
Here in Ohio you must run front tags. There is talk about changing to just back plate. Hope they do.

ED1966SS Jan 6th, 00, 11:50 AM I have gone over 20 years without running a front plate on various cars. It started with an '80 Corvette I had - it just didn't look good with the front license plate on - so I never used it. I also have run several other cars without a front plate. I have only been stopped once, about a 1/4 mile from my house. I told the officer the truth - that it just didn't look good. He gave me a warning ticket, but I never put the front plate on.
