Tried Gojo tried the soap, but nothing will take it off? Try your standard old carb cleaner. It works great! Brake cleaner works good to.

If my hands don't come clean, I just pour a little gas on a rag and scrub. I'm sure that's not very good for ya, but hey, it works!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Something else that works really good, but a lot of people may not realize, is Fresh, Clean motor oil. Today's oils have lots of detergents in them to keep the inside of your engine clean, and they really clean your hands good too; although you still have to get the oil off your hands after they're clean.

Try using a tea spoon of sugar mixed with dish soap. the sugar acts as an abrasive and allows the soap to do it's thing . If you have any cuts or scrapes the sugar will not burn.

I find that leaving that dirt on your hands lessens the strain at "wife mandated" social events. (noone wants to talk to you - AND your wife may wish to leave early to hide you)It also gives a more manly flavor to food - especially the messy stuff that makes you lick your fingers. Another benefit is that you will meet more like minded folks (motor heads) both male and female. I say LEAVE IT ALONE !If it was supposed to be off, it would come off !

best ways I've found to clean hands after getting done is to slather some dish soap on before you begin, let it dry then some bar soap under the finger nails. When your done nothing works quite like powdered Tide; moisten the hands grab the soap and keep wringing them till they feel dry. Quich rinse in warm water and your hands will be good as new.

Gas, carb cleaner and brake cleaner dry out your skin, making the grease get sucked into the pores... not good.

I learned to use Dish Soap and powdered laundry detergent. It works really well but it does sting a bit on those wounds that we are all too familiar with!

Just remember when your using a chemical to clean your hands it's going strait to your liver. Next time you buy a chemical ask for the MSDS sheet, this will help you out for all sorts of things and also gives you an education on what your using. Chemicals used improperly can harm you so watch your self. We all want to be around in the future to enjoy our Chevelles, off the soap box.

Go down to the pharmacy or wherever and get a box of latex gloves. You can get 100 of them for 6 bucks and you can change them a couple of times during a work session. Then when it comes time to wash, use any old mild hand soap and you're done. Easy.

Wes: It is not the dirt that concerns me but the method of removal. The dirt is far less dangerous than the suggested (toxic) methods of cleaning. Sure, I used some of those complex chemicals stolen from work 20 years ago, but aren't we supposed to be smarter now?? Forget the tri chloro ethanes and so on, use use soap and be happy.

DONT use any of the chemicals such as carb cleaner brake cleaner or laquer thinner to wash your hands! You see what it does to grease , oil , sludge or paint, think what it's doing to your hands. espessialy brake cleaner or laquer thinner, it gets absorbed through your skin and goes right to your liver. that's a scary thought huh?I thought so. I do body work for a living, and iv'e worked in 2 dealerships over the last 17 years and Iv'e seen bodymen and mechanics with awful hands because of the chemicals we use. there's a guy I work with now who's a mechanic where I work, his hands are so bad he had to take a few months off from work so they would heal up. Now he has to wear gloves any time he works on something.
Iv'e recently gotten in the habbit of trowing on a pair of latex gloves whenever i'm doing suspension work, mixing paint, or even changing my oil. theyr'e hard to get used to but they help keep your hands clean.

I don't want to sound like a candy ass, but so much of the stuff we use around our cars is carcinogenic. And I've seen that nasty bitch up close and personal. So, yeah, I've used brake parts cleaner, and then D&L right afterwards, but I think we could be mindful of what we're doing. I tried to get used to rubber work gloves, courtesy of the local steel plant, I hate 'em. But I'm scared of the big "C" more. Abrasives, such as Comet, pumice, etc. work as well as anything. And hey, in a few days all the skins falls off and regenerates anyway.

It's just not smart to wash yourself in a carcinogen.

I use the latex gloves, but not all the time. There are product availble that you can apply before starting the dirty work on your car, one is called liquid glove and it seems to work ok. Take a look around the parts stores and see what you can come up with that might work for you. As I said before when you by a Chemical ask for the MSDS sheet, in CA. they have to provide it for you if you ask. This paper contains tons of info on what these Chemicals can do to you and what to do if you get over exposed.

Are commercial hand cleaner products dangerous to use? My partner prefers a creamy kind of product, and I like to add a little
bit of another product with pumice in it. With a little stiff brushing my hands are
cleaner than they were for the last 20 years.

Just got done putting in an engine and trans and my hands are CLEAN. After the go-jo to get the thick stuff off I go in the house and wash the dishes!! It not only cleans the hands real well it softens them(it also softens the wife's disposition, she thinks I'm being helpful).
I started using a water based biodegradable solvent in my parts washing tank and it is great. It cleans well and doesn't seem to hurt the skin. After using it to clean parts I rinse them with water and dry with a rag. It took 30 years of grit off my sisters Camaro parts. It is UPS shippable and I got it from Northern tool.
