: Looking to buy a Chevelle
BigNFat May 1st, 99, 2:54 PM I'm new to the chevelle site and need some info.i've been looking at a few 70 SS's with 454.they are in very poor condition but the owners will not go under $3,000.I love the cars but refuse to pay that much for a car i'll have to put around 4 or 5 thousand to restore.I will appreciate any feedback, suggestions,or comments.
Sincerly, BigNFat
ACES-70 May 1st, 99, 3:16 PM UMMM Sorry all bad news here my friend: First of all to find a nice shell, u are gunna pay up to 4-6000 dollars for, second u can spend 4-5 thousand dollars just doin the motor, the reason u cant find anything is because it doesnt xist, need to raise your sites, a average restoration these days watchin your penneys will run 15-25 grand with U doin all the leg work, a professional job (as in give em your 5000 dollar shell an call me when its done thingie) could range from 25- ????????? Grand, Good Luck , L89SEDAN
A true 70SS 454, original drive train? Restorable? $3000? TAKE IT! Where are these cars? I want one! Seriously, look at the Autotrader on line to see the big bucks a semi-restored car can go for (15-25K easy). I'd rather start from scratch with a restorable car, strip it down completely, and go from there. Then I would know my where every penny of my $20,000 went.

72CHEVELLE May 3rd, 99, 7:45 AM If you find a 70 w/ the original 454 (no matter what shape it's in) for $3000 and you don't want it, give me the number and I'll take it!! It's a better deal than what you think. I paid $3800 (maybe a little too much considering the shape it was in) for my 72 and I've never regretted it. Whatever you put into one of these beauties (money-wise), you'll be repaid in compliments, thumbs-up, etc. Its the emotion behind the restoration process and the end result that makes it all worth-while. Good luck and keep us posted.
Steve S May 3rd, 99, 8:13 AM The 1970 Chevelle SS is probably the most cloned make out there. Be careful when purchasing a 70SS. I would need proof that it was an SS (Build sheet, original bill of sale, Canadian built cowl tag info, or matching BB). If you want to go the cheap route you are much better off finding a good Malibu and doing the clone yourself. I assume you have read up on IDing an SS on this site in the resto section.

Buck Mustard May 3rd, 99, 9:48 AM I agree with everything already said here. I want to add that my '70 Malibu w/ SB cost me over $2000. Bad interior, some body damage, etc. Depending on what part of the country you live in, a good rust-free 30 year old car is going to cost some bucks.
And if you think you are going to restore it for 4 or 5 thousand, I expect you will be in for a surprise. Its amazing how these things can suck up money.
jaqazi May 3rd, 99, 1:38 PM When you say very poor what do you mean? These guys are all drooling over a $3K 70 SS 454, but does it have rust holes the size of laundry baskets in the trunk? If it is just worn out, this is not a bad price. Remember, the 70 SS 454 is THE most collectable Chevelle there is.
I have just spent 21k on a $3100 67 SS. If I had to do it over again I might spend more time looking for a car with less collsion damage. Rust and collision damage can be the most expensive things to fix. Interiors are relatively cheap. If you know how to build a motor, then a good paint job and body work will be your most expensive items (5 to 10k).
Often you will be far better off spending 12K on a nice car and then sprucing it up. But who has 12K to put into a car all at once tho?
My advice, if you want to do a quality restoration, buy a straight rust free car with the original drive train. But just get the car. It may take years before you have the money to do the car right (it took me 9), but these cars are only going to go up in price. This is assuming that you love Chevelles and are not just looking for a cool ride. If you just want a cool ride, don't buy a 70 SS. They are just too expensive.
Be sure to check the part numbers before you buy. Engine should match tranny, rear end, body.

dab67 May 3rd, 99, 2:23 PM I live on the NC coast and these cars are scarce. I stumbled on a 67 malibu, original owner ,(virgin) all original down to the owner`s manual and protecto plates, and I paid 7500 with 18,000 yes eighteen thousand original miles. Some may think I`m crazy but I think I got a good deal, which is all that really matters anyway. good luck!
