: Vinyl Molding for Convertible

I'm in the process of restoring my '68 convertible and I had a little bit of rot on the top of the windshield pillar (where the convertible top rests when its up - just above the sun visors). There was black vinyl material glued to this area and it was covering the rot spot that needed fixing so I removed it. Now I can't seem to find anyone who knows what this vinyl trim was called or where I can get something like it to replace the original. Any suggestions out there on either what the name of this piece is called or where I a could possibly find the material would be appreciated.

Thanks....Jon

There was no factory installed vinyl strip on the top of the windshield frame. The weatherstripping was attached to the top frame to cover the staples at the front. My guess is someone added that to enhance the sealing on an, otherwise shot, header-seal. In the process it probably trapped moisture and aggravated the rust problem.

Jon,

I have a 68 conv that I'm doing a body off restoration on too. I wondered about that vinyl strip also. I'm still six months away from re-assembly of that portion. If you find a source or an answer, please e-mail me.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

I knew that the piece was factory. I thought that I had seen it on other convertibles. After reading Alan F's response I thought I was going crazy! Anyway, thanks for the response and I'll keep digging and if I find anything I'll let you know.

I believe all convertibles have the vinyl covering. At least all the ones I have seen have it. (and usually the rust under it also)

My 69 Conv. has the same vinyl piece. It is factory. You can have an interior man replace it for you. They just take a piece of the same madrid vinyl and cut to fit.
At least that's what the guy said that was going to do mine. I havn't had it done yet.

I have to amend my reply. I *thought* you were talking about an additional piece of weatherstripping. My '70 has a piece of matching color upholstery grade vinyl on the header. My apologies if I caused any confusion. Additionally, I have never seen it reproduced but imagine that a competent upholstery shop could make/install it.
