In an application like this I would definantly get a one wire type alternator from a place like summit or jegs.

Justin;

Converting from a generator to alternator is a little more tricky than external regulator alternator to internal regulator alternator (which I covered in the "tech ref").

Although in the past, I've voiced consern about one-wire alternators running hot (It may be unfounded and just an idea I've picked up somewhere), I agree with Mike as far as it being the easy way to go.

If you decide to run a typical internal regulator alternator, the bigest problem you will have is with the "energize" line. You HAVE to have an ignition switch that has two separate "power on" lines coming out of it!! One goes through the "alternator" or "generator" idiot light and then on to the alternator. The reason that it has to be a separate line is that if it isn't, the alternator will back-feed the system and you will not be able to turn off the car once it's running.

It's possible to play with relays and get the same function, but it takes a fair amount of thinking to get it right.

does the one wire alternator from summit come with directions? where does the one wire hook up to? thanks for all your help.

If you can mount it up thats 99% of the battle. The one wire goes dirrectly to the positive battery cable. If you want to run an ampmeter it's a little more complicated. I would put a voltmeter. Simple hookup.
