i just purchased some autometer guages(mechanical temperature and electric voltmeter of course) where is the best place to put the temp senser and where is the best 12v source for the volt guage? plus, where is the best place to ground everything? need advise, please help

Richard, The best temp sensor location is the stock one in the driver's side head. Voltmeter can be connected to any 12V source under the dash, which is hot when the ignition is on. Ground can be any part of the body structure, including the metal dash housing. von

Sometimes you can get a little more accurate temp reading on the intake next to the thermostat. THe head will heat up sooner and it will look like the thermostat is sticking. Either place is OK. tom

There is a pipe plug in the same position on the passenger side head that can be removed. Don't know if this is true for all SBC heads. I prefer not to replace the idiot light sending unit, since I'm not always watching the gauges and the light can be your only warning before it's too late.
I also use a tee for oil pressure guage and light.
