I have a 75 Chevelle with a 1/4" hole in the top of the tail pipe about a foot from the rear of the car. Does someone have a suggestion for a product and/or procedure for plugging the hole inconspicously so I can get it inspected. I can get it inspected a block from the house. I don't want to drive to Midas without a current inspection sticker.
Thanks

Geezzz where do you live? The polution police won't get you if you actually are on the way to get it fixed. Call, get an appointment (to CYA) with MIDAS or whoever and get the tailpipe replaced. Then go get it inspected. The alternative is to let it fail the inspection and get the paperwork, go get it fixed and take it back. (The maybe "legal" but not logical way.) At least that's the way it was when I used to live in "polution controlled" country. No sweat now, if it has a serial number on it, its OK. NO inspection of any kind. [rural AZ]

WOW - no inspection . Good reason to move to Arizona !!! How about other types of enforcement??? Speeding, spitting on the sidewalk, etc ??

Inspection?????? We are also free from smog inspection here in California up to 1973. You can put anything in a 73 or older. And I heard this 73 number is suppose to move up as the years go by.
PUT A TAILPIPE ON IT!

Arizona does a tailpipe sniff at idle and speed , and emission equipment installation visual inspection on 67 and up in the metro areas (i.e. Phoenix and Tucson), unless the car is 5 years old or less. Everyone else is exempt, unless you commute to one of these cities.

Here in Ohio we use old beer cans and hose clamps to patch this stuff. Always have a large supply of them. Probably won't pass muster where you live though. tom

Depends where you live Fred. Here in Canada as you know during this time of the year you could get away with the duct tape. The problem is crawling under the thing to do the work ha ha.

Cut a piece of thin sheetmetal, form it around the pipe, clean off rust from pipe, apply permatex ultra copper high temp silicone gasket maker around hole, clamp sheetmetal in place. Sounds crude, but it works, and it'll hold you till you're ready to replace the pipe.

That close to the tailpipe tip isn't real hot. For that small of a hole, when I was a teen, we would just sand around it and slap some bondo on it. Held up fine. von
