How do you adjust roller rockers.I have a clacking noise coming from the rear of the valve cover. It almost sounds like it is coming from the distributer.Any advice would be welcome.

You might want to readjust the gap between the rocker and spring, or crank the car and take the valve cover off, either tighten the rocker or losen it, and put the cover back on you might have to try this a couple of times, for it to stop Knocking, this should help.

I've got a set of 1.5 Crane stamped roller tips, and with a set of L-82 Vette valve covers, a few of them still hit the covers. Might want to pull the covers, look on the pushrod side for any signs of rubbing.

Potts,
Previous advice is good. You must us tall valve covers or a spacer with rollers or they will hit the valve covers. Try this adjustment method with the motor stone cold (hydralic lifters only); set #1 at TDC, then mark the dampener into quarters.(white shoe polish works good) On a V8 the engine fires once ever 1/4 revolution in the same order as the firing order (1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2) so; begin at #1 and loosen both valves. Then start by tightening each rocker while turning the pushrod with your fingers at the same time. When you can just barelyturn the pushrod stop. This is 0 (zero) clearance. Now tighten the rocker another 1/2 turn and you have the proper preload of about .025" on the lifter. Now turn the engine over (clockwise from the front)1/4 turn to the next mark and do the same with cylinder #8,then #4,#3,#6,#5,#7, and finally #2. Work slowly and carefully to make sure you are on TDC at each cylinder. Pull the plugs and peek into the cylinder if you have to. That's it. No burnt hands or splashing oil. Let me know how it turns out. By the way both of my muscle cars (61 Vette and 65 Malibu SS) have roller rockers and the are worth the effort.

I Use Harlan Sharp Rockers. (Only thing I will use) Make sure that the rockers are not hitting the valve covers, studes or the retainers--quite common. I adjust my rockers the same way that we do on our econorail (solid roller cam on it hydraulic on my SS). Bring one valve to pretty much wide open then set the clearance on the other one on that cylinder. Bring the valve you just set to wide open and set the first one--repeat for the other cylinders. For hydralics--use a gentle touch and when the pushrod just stops being very easy to spin with your fingers you have taken out all of the lash. Add about a quarter of a turn and you are in the ballpark.

Potts, The above info is bang-on....I ran into the same problem with my 1.7 rollers - over hydraulic roller lifters. After adjusting the lash as outlined above, I still had loud metal-to-metal smacking. I went back in, and found two rockers sloppy loose. (the poly-locks were tight) After re-setting the two, and firing it back up, I was forced to re-adjust one of those two a second time. 14 months have past, and all's still quiet. Another guy that I've talked to, had the same thing happen to him. Good luck with yours.
