I looking for a way to run '56's or 4.88's in my "new" 67ss. Does anyone have info on aftermarket overdrives available for the M-21 muncie? I've talked to gear vendors already. The 22% reduction isn't quite enough. And it's big $$$.

Gene;

PLEASE go to the "gearing formulas" and "manual transmissions" pages in the technical reference section of this site.

This may open your eyes on options over running 4.88's.

Wes.

Maybe for about the same money you could run a Richmond 5 speed with the really deep first gear. Something like a 4.5 to one as compared to the 2.2 or 2.56 to 1 on the Muncie. Pretty bulletproof trans. Just a thought. tom

Wes, I've been to those excellent reference pages and crunched numbers like a madman. To get the same "wheels up" launch the car used to enjoy with a 327 between it's framerails ( it's an SS396 ), I'd need a first gear ratio of about 9.5:1. Tom, the Richmond gives me over 10.0:1. Perfect, although the car has been delivered to me in near original condition ( the original owner had 4.88's installed at purchase ). So you can see that the original M-21, 88's and an overdrive so I can drive on the Thruway, would be nice. A Richmond in disguise is becoming a real possibility since I can't seem to locate the right OD. ( It has to stand hard launches by an L89 427 now in the car). Thanks for the replies. By the way, for those that may wander down this path - Gear Vendors made some prototype ODs for the sixties Chevelles Muncie). The problem was that the length was such that the lever would've come up behind the factory console. As the guy at GV said, a Richmond may be less "intrusive".
