The 402 was the biggest engine available in a Heavy Chevy.

I have no info to back this up, but I recall the Heavy Chevy and the Rally Nova were built as a low priced sporty car that the average guy could buy. Lots of us getting out of the army back then and these cars were pretty popular. All of them I saw were 307 or 350 two barrel with 3 sp. man. or auto trans. These cars didn't hold up very well here in the rust belt and now they are really rare. I haven't seen one even in a car show for 10 years around here. tom

Had one! A real 72 Heavy Chevy. Very cute. That was about it. It was dark, irridescent brown (almost black at night) with a tan bench seat interior. 307, TH350, 2.73 gear. Slow as a snail but pretty.

Sorry. Heavy Chevys were anything but heavy. No big blocks.

I have a picture from 1976 of it in my driveway along with a friends 71 green malibu in the backgrounds. I'll put it on my web site on Thursday 5/6 at http://members.tripod.com/dfdoler

Ah those were the days.

Sorry to bust your bubble guys but the Heavy
Chevy was available with the 402. Plus you
could also get a 402 in a regular malibu in 1970-72. I know of a gentleman that has a 402 Heavy Chevy that is all orginal. Brown with white stripes has had it since 1973. Has the original paint job. He takes the car
to Super Chevy at Indy just about every year and drags it.

69 is correct guys. The Heavy Chevy was available with all engine options except the 454. I purchased my 71 off the lot with a 245hp 350 and three speed on the floor. I almost ordered one with a 402 but needed a car and did not want to wait. Still have the Heavy Chevy !

Actually, I am glad I didn't. I love small blocks and would not have anything else ! Nothing like a 355 at about 8500 rpm to got you going, Lets see a rat do that !

I guess I will be passing your little small
block that is turning a death rpm at 8500, while I will be turning a leisurely 6000rpms
with my 454.

Hate to burst the rat bashing bubble, my 427 winds to 8200 with ease!(I too love hi winding mice though)
Did all Heavy Chevy cars come with the decals applied from the factory or were they installed at the dealer???

Hey Bill:
Have you ever built and ran a 377? I know your in the engine business but, sometimes you just don't get to have fun. If you like high strung mice build a 377. I built one for a buddy to race in circle track car as a claimer. Needless to say it was done for less than $1,100 for a longblock and not expected to run very long. It made about 5 races and the car hit the wall, the engine was put into a 69 camaro with a new set of bearings and hone with new rings, and valve springs and rocker arms and push rods, it still runs strong after about 5,000 miles of abuse. He can't kill this thing it's the energizer 377.

Joe,
I have never run a 377 myself but I have several customers that swear by them. The biggest motor I have ever run is a 355. I like the challenge of trying to wring every bit out of the small cubic inches.

I have a 72 Heavy Chevy. Like most people I wanted an SS but now I actually prefer the Heavy. I have only personally seen one other one and it has been a devil of a time getting correct info. on them. I can safely say now that I know a lot more than the 'average' Chevelle enthusiast does about Heavys, though I always want to learn more. Bill K. has been a big help in that regard. But the answer is 'yes' they could come with a 402 BB but if you wanted the 454, you had to spend the big bucks for the SS. Mine came with a 350ci, 165hp two barrel with the Malibu dash. They all had stripes along with Heavy Cheavy decals with no emblems on the trunk, sides or grill. They all had the cowl hood but I believe you could option it up for the cowl induction package. They had the 300 interior which, I have been unable to find a reproduction of. Other than the 454, you could get most [ if not everything] that the SS had but this would defeat the stripper idea of the thing in the first place. I would like to hear from anyone else who has info on these cars.

Not much info to be found about Heavy Chevys
Hmm, looks like the archives need a little up dating.

No one to blame for not much info on heavy chevys. They weren't that popular and not many took them serious as a muscle car.Back in mid-70's mine out ran many of the cars on the road especially top end. Didn't drag too much. Would like to see more info and where to get CHEVELLE interior.

Does anybody that owns a Heavy Chevy have pictures of their car. I am curious about the interior, there aren't any emblems on the door panels. Was this common for these cars.

BillK
May 5th, 99, 4:02 PM
I guess I am going to have to take some pictures and scan them on to my web site. Maybe a Heavy Chevy page ? I have a bunch of 35mm slides of my car when it was new but I have to figure out how to scan them. That is the subject of another post. The door panels were indeed one of a kind, as was the interior I am pretty sure. I have never seen any other model Chevelle with the same upholstery. I guess I am going to head out to the garage with the camera and start using film !

Hey good idea Bill, information on the Heavy Chevy seems to be pretty sparce. I think this site needs an article done on them by someone that really knows about them.(hint hint)

I added some of this thread to the archives
http://www.chevelles.com/archive/

Can't you just have prints made off the slides and scan them ?

Dean,
I guess I am going to have to break down and take some of the slides and have them put on CD. I just hate the thought of them getting lost in transit. I am thinking about getting one of the scanners that does slides as I have over 100 boxes of slides from drag racing events dating from 1967 to the mid 70's when I came to my senses and started using regular film. In the meantime, I am open to any Heavy Chevy questions. Mine is still all original except for some "minor" driveline mods. It is just about ready for a long awaited paint job and hopefully it will be back on the road this summer.

BillK,
Did your car have carpet or a rubber mat. I don't know much about how my interior should have looked from the factory. My car has carpet in it now, but I'm thinking that the idiot that I got the car from put it in.

BillK
May 6th, 99, 4:18 PM
71,
Mine had rubber floor mats from the factory. I replaced them with the carpet out of a wrecked SS when the car was about a year old, I wish I had kept the original mats now, even though I doubt I would change it back.

My research reveals that [thanks again, Bill] that all Heavys came with a rubber floor mat. But I suppose you could option up for carpet. I once heard someone say they could not get repro rubber floor coverings. I'm doing a frame off and putting my Heavy as close to possible back to stock "appearing" condition. I had my resto guy track down the rubber floor covering brand new.. I think maybe Ted Williams makes it but if you really want to know , e- mail me and I'll get back to you. One last comment- I earlier stated I could not find a repro interior as all Heavys came with a 300 interior. I just wanted to add that I still believe that is true and I also believe that the 72's came with a cloth insert stitched into the vinyl. In general I found most repro kits that you buy are all vinyl but if you want to spend almost twice as much you could get the cloth, vinyl combo. I just opted to go with the all vinyl incorrect interior since I never could find a 300 interior anyway. Again I'm no expert on Heavys but I have yet to find anyone who is. Thats why I think mine is kinda cool. BTW, I have the #'s somewhere on how many 72's were produced and its less tha 9,000. I think it is something like 5,790 although I don't recall the exact #'s. Again, I think it is kinda cool to have a car like this even though it is a "stripper" because there are so many SS's and SS clones out there. Just my humble opinion. FWIW, mine came with a AM radio,, A/C, column shifted auto trans, bench seat, Malibu dash, no clock

Hey guys -

Here's what Boyce's SS book has to say on the '71 Heavy Chevy:

- Option code YF3
- blacked out grille
- domed hood w/ lock pins, stripe delete
- 14x6 rallys, no trim rings
- special striping & body lettering
- engines ranged from 307 to big-block 400
- cowl induction available optionally
- no production figures for '71 from Chevy
- essentially the same package in'72

It sounds like there were a few more differences as well. These are definitely cool-looking rides! Congrats to anyone who has/had one.

I had a problem finding rubber "carpet" for my '73, I called ACC and found they can make repros from their regular carpet mold.

Michael,
My 71 also had a vinyl bench with cloth inserts, so it was not just a 72 thing. I have 2 of my build sheets to prove it. I would like to thank everybody for the great info. It so hard to find information about these rare cars.

What exactly defines the "Heavy Chevy" I havn't run across this term before. Is it just what you call them made from 71-79 or something like that?

I remember seeing them on the Chevy dealer lots when new. The biggest turnoff to me was the 14x6 rally wheels without trim rings. I think they took the "stripped-down" thing too far with tiny wheels and by leaving off the trim rings. With some beefier tires and rims they would have looked really tough, especially with those paint schemes...

I purchased a 72 Heavy Chevy about three years ago that has the original 402/400 turbo/12 bolt. Other options that came on the car are tach and gauges(5500 redline), F41 suspention, power disc brakes, and sport wheel. It needs a full resto but is mostly original with matching numbers and build sheet. Just wanted to let you know they for sure did build some.
