: Harmonic Balancer Splits....
junglejimmie Dec 16th, 00, 4:04 PM I've seen my share of old balancers "slip" and need replacing. So......my bud comes over in his Blazer and ask me to set the timing so, I aim the light and no mark hmmmm..... upon closer inspection I find that the outer ring has "walked" fwd and is touching the pulley. I tell him to change the balancer and I'll set it. Fast forward to today, after replacing it with another used balancer it does the same thing. I'm sure he beat it on with a maul knowing that yo-yo so I was thinking the Thrust Bearing?? Any ideas??......

mr 4 speed Dec 16th, 00, 5:35 PM It could be coincidence that he had the original balancer split along with the used replacement.I had the outer ring walk off my balancer on the 350 Olds motor in my 82 Cutlass...I replaced it-no problem.

Schurkey Dec 16th, 00, 8:44 PM My only experience with dampers moving was on an engine that soon after tossed a rod. I've always wondered if the bearings/journals went bad because the damper blew...or if the damper blew because of bearing/journal problems.

Aiiieeee! Yeah, I doubt it's within spec after that. The question is, is it worth checking? Only you and he can answer that... That guy needs a dope slap from his friend (hint).
I had one guy tell me he wasted two crankshafts in his boat motor before he realized that they had the dampner on there for a reason. Gee, it won't fit, we'll just leave this off... :O
