What SS option came with the 5000 redline tachometer in '70? I have a '70 tach for a '70 and it has a yellow line at 4700 and leads into redline at 5000 RPM. Someone told me that this was an LS-6 tach, but I am not so sure.

Hugh- The LS6 and L78 had a red line of 6500. I had a '70 LS5 car that had the same tach you have, 5000 red line. I have seen documented LS5 cars with 5500 redlines, also.

Hugh,
My understanding is that the higher the engine output, the higher the redline. In 1970 there were two tachs you should get with an SS: 5500 redline (hydraulic lifter L34 and LS5) and 6500 redline (solid lifter L78 and LS6.)
That is what was *supposed* to happen. Of course with any assembly line mistakes are made or decisions are made based on parts availiblity. Dave's LS5 with a 5000 redline tach is an illustration of this.
I myself have a 70SS with a 5000 redline tach. I salvaged a set of guages out of a 70 Monte Carlo with undetermine engine. This is the tach I got. If I understand correctly, when a Malibu was ordered with gauges it would get the SS dash layout with said gauges. Therefore, based on the lower output Monte and Malibu engines availible a lower redline tach was appropriate.
Someone please correct me if I'm in error.

All Chevelles and Monte Carlos
built with small block engines and optional gauge package came with a 5000 redline tach. SS L-34 and LS-5s came with 5500 redline (if properly equipped) As previously posted, L-78,L-89, and LS-6 equipped SS's came with the 6500 redline.
