I installed my rear main seal the other night, but I decided to put some silicon RTV on the block ridge and cap ridge. Now I am thinking this might cause a leak (which is what I was trying to avoid).
Whats the best way to install this seal, dry?, someone else (Wiggins?) suggested offsetting the mating gap from the block/cap gap, which I also thought of doing.
Should I pull it out and buy another one? I only have the mains tightened and not fully torqued.
Thanks for any help

From what I can recal. I just put the blocks seal down in there. I then put two dabs of RTV on the ends. I did the same for the cap's seal. So far no rear man leakage (2k miles).
However, I do have a drip from the front lip of my oil pan. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif Now that's irony!

Hi 1966 L78,
It seems that all I ever installed were Fel-Pro rear main seals, and I do offset them a little from block / cap mating surface. As I recall sealant is recommended between the cap and block, and the stuff Fel-Pro prvides is thinner than regular RTV, I believe it is intended for mating surfaces with gaps no greater than 0.010". I recall that they also supply an adhesive for where the seals mate up. But as for the RTV you used, you'll probably be OK.
