I recently had someone ask me if I had some reverse light linkage for a 4spd '70 SS. I have never owned or restored a 4spd car, so I am not sure of what he is looking for exactly. He needs everything that make his reverse lights work. does anyone know the part numbers of these parts or at least the names of the parts? And does anyone know where I could find this stuff. I want to help this guy out, and these are the last parts he needs for his total restoration.

I believe what he is talking about is the reverse lockout linkage. The linkage goes from the arm on the reverse shift lug on the tranny, to a bellcrank on the left frame rail then up to an arm on the outside of the steering column. This linkage allows you to only remove the keys when the car is in reverse. I believe the lights are run by a switch that screws into the trans and is actuated when you shift into reverse. The reason they are often gone is that you had to remove it to install headers. Mat ACES #2424

ELLI, is the part number just for the switch or for all the lock-out linkage as well? this stuff is hard to find in salvage yards. they always have everything but these parts. I wonder what people did with this stuff when they installed their headers? thanks for the reply!

Huge,
I have just researched this and I have found for my 67' that the 4-spd muncie transmission back-up lamp switch GM P/N 1993307 also the two piece bracket assy. that attaches to the side cover P/N 3886923 and the rod with retainer that attaches to the reverse lever P/N 3886922,Retainer P/N 148145.This rod is actuated of the reverse linkage. I hope this helps

Hugh,

My 71 4 speed backup light switch is on the top of the steering column, under the dash. The linkaage described by Elli also locks the steering. You must put the tranny in reverse to remove the key. This was GM's anti theft device. I purchased my linkage from CJ Auto, 1-800-897-6846. They seem to be good folks.

If he is not against repo stuff. They sell repo kits in the Year One catalog for about 100 bucks. But I am sure others have them as well. Mat Aces#2424
