: Auto or Manual?

Good afternoon, y'all.

I'm sure that this question has been posted before, but I gotta ask anyway..... I'm also sure that everybody has an opinion on this issue, but I want to hear both arguments.

Here goes. I have a 1970 Chevelle that has the original TH350 in it. I just replaced the original 307 with a 377 (approx 400 hp) and now it is time to think about upgrading the tranny. I have asked many questions before about the 700R4 and I received many answers and opinions (thanks). The next question is about installing a manual (5 spd, 4 spd) in this monster. I have always driven cars with manuals in them. To me they give a better driving experience. Which brings the question:

What is involved with replacing the automatic with a manual tranny? I know that the clutch pedal will have to be added and possible work to the driveshaft....

If I were to order a tranny from, say Summit or JEG'S, what all would I need to purchase to put together a good, strong tranny AND still retain the bench seat?

I know this is a long post and the question is kind of vague, but I really do not know where to even start.

Thanks again for all of your responses in advance.

Several of the aftermarket mail order houses sell a "pkg" for changing to a manual. they usually contain everything except the bell housing. Start with the sponsor for TEAM CHEVELLE, GROUND UP. You may also need to change the brake pedal, an auto brake pedal is usually wider than a manual brake pedal.
I would recommend that the first place to look is in the ad section of this web site. It's great.

YA, FINALLY ANOTHER 377 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have one in my 69, How do you like it??
Ok, I Vote auto, I have a th-350 with a 3500 stall converter, 3.73 posi, and I need traction in a big way. (Just bought lift bars, and slicks are comming soon). For racing and drivabiltiy you can't beat the automatic. No missed shifts, and I have never seen anyone shift a manual as fast as an automatic and maintain traction through shifts. Oh ya and drop me a line with the info on your 377.

Thanks a lot....
This site really is cool. This is the first place I turn to when I have a question about anything to do with the ol' hot rod.

Thanks again.

Please excuse my lack of technical know-how, but...

I think your block needs to have a hole in it for some pivot ball (or something) to be screwed in. If your block does not already have this hole - it will need to be tapped.

Hopefully, someone else can elaborate on this as I am (obviously) no expert. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
