: Just a quick fuel pump question
Dennis Strawley Dec 3rd, 99, 1:57 PM The new fuel pump I bought for my '71 chevy 350 has three outlets for connections. One goes to the carb, one to the fuel tank. What is the other one, and where do I connect it, as the last fuel pump didn't have this extra connction. I assume it is some type of vapor recovery connection. Thanks, Dennis
Rick Loncosky Dec 3rd, 99, 2:57 PM Dennis, it's probally a return line back to the tank. I replaced the one on my 77 Chevy pick-up. The one I took off only had two fittings. I had this extra line hanging there by the pump that I hooked to with a short piece of hose on the new pump. All is well with this hook up. If you have some sort of vapor recovery/charcoal canister thing I believe it gets hooked to the carb. Good Luck, Rick....
Randy Mosier Dec 4th, 99, 4:14 PM Dennis, where did you buy the pump? I have a set-up similar to yours, and I only have the inlet and outlet connections. The two fitting pump is still available. Sounds like someone gave you a pump for the wrong year model.
Dennis Strawley Dec 5th, 99, 8:40 AM Randy, I have been assured by two local parts dealers that this is infact the correct pump. When I try to start the car, fuel shoots out of this outlet. Should I try to just plug it up?? Thanks, Dennis
catman Dec 5th, 99, 9:28 AM Take your old pump with you to a differant parts store ,and get one like it ,, you have wrong pump for your car ,, dont plug off extra fitting , its a return line for a differant application. unless you do have a return line that has been disconnected ,, look closely were main fuel line runs on frame and see if you have xtra line not hooked up

Randy Mosier Dec 5th, 99, 10:26 AM My 71 only has two lines, but you still need to do as Catman says and double check for a return line. The factory has been known to make mid-year design changes. I would keep looking for the right pump. Check Summit or Jegs. I have seen the third fitting plugged on some vehicles, but that all depends on how particular you are about your own car.
Gary S Dec 5th, 99, 4:12 PM The guys are right. The partsman gave you the wrong pump. Chevy has been using both the 2-holer, and the 3-holer pumps for years. I have both kinds in my stock of parts in my garage.
Take it back and get the right one. Show them the old one if need be. And, if they can't get you the right one, you will have to take your business somewhere else.
Chances are, it's the wrong pump. But for some reason, I got a 3-hole pump for my 70 Malibu at Autozone. The employee I was talkimg to, who seemed to know old Chevy VERY well, informed me that the extra hole is for A/C. He whipped a pump out that wasn't wasn't for A/C, and it had 2 holes, and a less deep reservoir. In any case, he told me to plug the hole, and live with it. I put the bad boy in, and haven't had a problem with it. I have no idea what A/C has to told with fuel pumps, but it works, it was $10, and I can't complain.

Dennis Strawley Dec 5th, 99, 8:05 PM Gentlemen: I was told by a third partsman that this is in fact the correct pump, the one I took off did have only two fittings. He told me to plug the hole. I did just that and the car did start briefly. I will have more time to deal with it later in the week. lev, yes the car has a/c. Thanks, Dennis
Randy Mosier Dec 5th, 99, 10:01 PM Dennis, the distributor installation,it went well, I assume. Anyway, if the three fitting pump is all you can get, plug the return hole and enjoy your car. The pump they sold you is probably a universal, multi application, fits all pump. Like I said, I didn't run into that problem when I bought mine. Install it and rock on.
Dennis Strawley Dec 6th, 99, 9:12 AM Randy, the distributor installation went well. Thanks for your assistance. All I have left to do now is to set the points, timing, and adjust the carb. Dennis
