: 68 chevelle interior

I just have two questions since I am beginning to restore the interior of my 68 chevelle to better condition.

The first question is, has anyone had their dash redone by Just Dashes, and what kind of price and quality have some of you had with them.

The second one is, if anyone knows of some places on the net where I can look at some pictures of the interior of nice 68 Chevelles, especially one of a SS instrument cluster, as I am going to attempt to make a factory-like tach built into my non-SS, as I have heard of others doing successfully. I have looked at the feature cars here, but I would like to observe more to see what is right and wrong inside, and what I'm working towards.

Thanks,
Tony

Can't help you on the first quesion, although I have never heard any thing bad about the place.

In regards to your other question, take a look at the on line ACE's magazines, issues 3 and 4 for some good dash picture. BTW, there was no "SS" dash in 68....tach and gauges were optional regardless of model.

Have not used a service for the dash. I am presently doing the interior on my 69 (what a job...) and I pulled the dash off today. I will paint it black and have my wife paint the silver lines back on it (she has a much steadier hand than me). I don't know how much you want to do yourself but this part is not very hard, cheaper (like me) and very rewarding. Give it a try....good luck...
PS Do not have any info on the tach..sorry

In regards to the tach: The factory unit is a roller tach, so unless you track an original one down, it won't look stock.

Not trying to knock you, but just wanted to point it out. I think you'll be better off setting it up to look good to you since it won't look stock.

I don't mind the tach looking too factory stock per say, but I was hoping to find a way to get the numbering to look the same style and size of the speedometer.
The reason I'm trying to build the tach into the instrument cluster is that it seems no matter where I put my present tach, it seems to get in the way of something, or look sloppy, hence if I could build it in somehow, it'll give the interior a "clean" look.
I'm a little apprehensive about doing this though, since it's never been altered, and was wondering if anyone has managed to successfully get an aftermarket tach to work into it, and still look good.
I suppose if I didn't have a column shifter I could work it in much easier.
If anyone has any ideas where I could put the tach (3"), or on which way I could go with this, I'd appreciate it. I don't mind something not looking necessarily stock, but would like it to look good. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Tony,

Have you thought about the clock hole? Not sure if you're using it or not, but that hole would be a good place to mount it, and you could do it without altering anything.

Look for a small tach that'll fit or is a bit smaller. You can use a sheetmetal flange to compensate if the tach is smaller.

That's what I did. Mounted the tach where the clock was. Used the clock adjust hole in the lens to mount a redline adjust needle. Looks good and is easy to see.
