I pulled a 283 out of my 67 Malibu and put in a 350.I am not sure what to use for brackets and pulleys. I tried a short waterpump with the large harmonic balancer,it would not line up with using the 283 waterpump pulley.I am now using the long shaft pump with a three groove pulley. That too doesnot seem to work with the 283 waterpump pulley. Plese give me your input so I can enjoy driving my Malibu again. Thanks

sounds like you are having fun http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif since you have the long pump and triple lower pulley, just get a waterpump pulley off a smallblock with the long pump. The waterpump style and pullies are a matches set, as you have found out.

I have the short water pump working with a 350. I put the origional 283 pulleys on the balancer and then had to press the pulley flange on the water pump back to get it to line up. The brackets for the PS pump lined up as is though, so I think the new water pump was made wrong (the origional water pump was leaking so I didn't use it). I did have to notch the lower PS bracket to clear the balancer, but it did work once I did that.
I had to do some manufacturing to get the alternator to mount in it's stock location since it was manifold mounted and I canged to headers.
I am using 462 heads and they do not have the bolt holes on the front so a long set-up would not work. Besides, I did not want to move the alternator since it belongs on the drivers side for my car, not the passenger side.

I ended up buying one of Summit's billet aluminum 3-groove crank pulleys for short water pump. Originally had to drive A/C, PS, and alternator. Since then I've removed the A/C, so now I have an extra groove in the crank pulley.
I had to cut out a special upper mounting plate for the PS pump, along with modifying the lower mount to clear the 8" balancer. Used a "Victor Wrench" (aka cutting torch) and bench grinder for this.
Got the chrome plate and "F" bracket from Summit for the lower alternator mount, and the long chrome curved arm for upper adjustment. Didn't like the geometry with the "F" bracket pointing sideways, so I made another bracket from angle iron to make the "F" bracket stand up. This put the alternator in a better position where the belt cleared the PS pump much better.
Probably doesn't help much since you can't see the products, but maybe it fuels the imagination.
It's probably cheaper and it's definitely easier to just go to a boneyard and get the long water pump setup.
