: Followup to filters - How often do you change your oil?
Byfield Jun 25th, 99, 8:06 AM With all the hype on new cars and how they don't need oil changes for 7,500 miles or so, Im wondering how often we all change our oil.
Just post the average miles between changes for all your vehicles.
Chevelle: so few miles that I do it in the spring when it comes out and the fall when it gets stored
Honda: Every 2,000, like clockwork

73Malibu Jun 25th, 99, 8:14 AM Oil changes
Chevelle: 2-3K or 3-4 months. Mine gets driven about 2k every 3 months or so. Always try to err on consertive
Lumina beater: 3 - 4 K miles maybe went to 4500 once, but I go 1.5K a month just to work so it adds up quick sometimes. I think it is BS to go over 4k the oil still looks ok after 3k ( not in the chevelle though)

Strohm Jun 25th, 99, 9:12 AM This is the way I look at it:
The motor oil companies say every 3000 miles. Their goal is to sell you more oil.
The car companies say every 7500 miles. Their goal is to sell you more cars.
I average this out and change mine every 5000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. The 5K is just really easy to remember. Since I don't put 5000 miles per year on my Chevelle, I change the oil twice a year.
malibukid Jun 25th, 99, 9:31 AM In my Z71 4x4 I change about every 3-4k and I drive the heck out of it.
But in my Chevelle about 2000-2500k. For the price I figure fresh oil & a new filter a little more often is pretty cheap insurance.
1bad67 Jun 25th, 99, 10:02 AM Chevelle: Kendall oil if it aint green its gone. daily drivers 4-7K depends on how bad oil looks, if its black its replacement time.
Now that the world changes oil every 3k recycling is now a concern so oil manufactures are going to tell you they have oil that can go 7K like quaker state. Its all about markiting and money. The way i see it keep oil in the motor, dont let it go to syrup and it will last.

jholp Jun 25th, 99, 10:10 AM About every 3000 miles - (three months) This is about when it starts to discolor in my applications, and as 1bad67 said, if black it's gone.

tom wurm Jun 25th, 99, 11:44 AM Every 2500 miles like clockwork.
Bob Bryan Jun 25th, 99, 12:04 PM MonteCarlo daily beater: every 3000 (over 215,000 on the ol' 305!)
68 Malibu: every 3 months (only about 1500 miles in that time)
65 Vette: Once a year (only about 200 miles a year)
Mobil 15W-50 Synthetic in everything!
David Nafarrete Jun 25th, 99, 12:33 PM Now here's an even trickier question...
Who makes the best oil?
Who makes the best filter?
[This message has been edited by David Nafarrete (edited 06-25-99).]
Wes Colby Jun 25th, 99, 2:24 PM David, haven't you been watching the Fram and Pennzoil commercials lately? What with Fram's patented Duraguard 'whatever you call it' and Pennzoil's 'liquid ball bearings', they certainly must be the best, hehe - not!
Commercials only want to sell us an image - "Image is Nothing - obey your Chevelle's thirst! Feed it Mobile 1 and only use ACDelco high performance filters." (gee, that kind of sounds like a new commercial idea - eh?) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Canuck64ss Jun 25th, 99, 4:49 PM Oil Change: Every 5,000 Kms (3,000 Miles) RELIGIOUSLY! Or 3 months...
Oil Used: 100% Pure Synthetic in performance applications, Semi Synth in regular duty.
Filter's Used: Delco for GM, Mopar or Filter1 for my Dodge RAM Truck and Duraguard for my daily putt-putt ford.
Best Filter: AC-Delco as a general rule. Go and cut some open and you decide. If you cut'em open, do it on un-used ones http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Quadzilla Jun 25th, 99, 6:41 PM I would just like to add that the synthetic stuff IS NOT recomended for older or high milage engines, nor for new cars. The rational is that on a new motor it won't be able to get into everything that needs it(don't ask me why) and on older cars they say that there is just WAY TOO MUCH clearence and so won't work like it should. So this means either stick with the good old 10w30 or rebuild!

David Nafarrete Jun 25th, 99, 8:14 PM Wes - Funny you should say that. Because I do use Mobil 1 and AC Delco Filters
Pat Kelley Jun 25th, 99, 8:51 PM My 66 EC daily driver every 3 months, probably 3000 to 4500 miles (odometer doesn't work). 67 EC just got it's second oil change last week. I'll probably change again 5-6 months or 3000 miles or something like that.
I use only Valvoline since every mechanic and racer I know uses the stuff in there own cars, just like the commercial says http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

elcamino Jun 26th, 99, 5:28 AM At work we have leased fleet vehicles (Wheels), with over 10,000 on the road. The oil change interval is set at 5,000 miles using crude oil (synthetic not allowed), take what you can get brand, life cycle of vehicle's is 100,000+ miles. My current vehicle 1999 K2500 Suburban (18,000 miles). It idle's all day long, yet over the last 25 years I have never had any engine related problem! As a matter of fact only one tranny on the 86 failed, other then that nothing, granted they are very tired and we once estimtaed the hours on the clock (98,000 miles) to = 250,000 miles on the 86 burban. (180 hours = 5,000 miles so we were told when it came to servicing)
My personal vehicle 99 GMC Z71 change at 1 year approx 10-15,000 miles using synthetic (done this for the last 25 years).

Wes Colby Jun 26th, 99, 3:53 PM Hey David, you might want to slap on a magnetic band (called FilterMag?) for your oil filter. I think mine was $35-40. I have not cut open a filter (yet) since using it but I have seen some tests (Hot Rod mag I think) that showed how much of the fine metal shavings it picked up after a Vette ran some sort of open road challenge. The amount of shavings it held on to was impressive. That thing is really strong too - be careful what you attach it to!

gibbons Jun 26th, 99, 10:31 PM F-250 with EFI 460- Mobil 1 10-30, Fram, 3000 miles
Accord- Valvoline 10-30, Honda filter, 5000 miles
MasterCraft boat with LT-1- Mobil 1 10-30, AC PF25, 50 hours
Chevelle with built 454- Mobil 1 15-50, AC PF 35L, twice a year (1000 miles, maybe?)
I guess the only trend here is the Mobil synthetic. Funny, though, my Accord has 151,000 miles and is still tight and strong. Well, let's say it hasn't lost power. All that, and regular oil.
Hot66ss Jun 26th, 99, 11:35 PM I change my oil in my 66 every 1500 or about 3 months. i change my oil in my 67 (daily driver) evey 2000-2500. i use castrol in the tired 283 (soon to be changed). Moble 1 is the best stuff going. i also like there oil filters. been running that combo in my 66 sence i rebuilt it, it now has little over 5000 on it and is as good as new (as it should be). my father also uses moble one in his work trucks and one of his little toyota pickups has 246,000 miles on it and still runs decent and the motor has never been opend.

elcamino Jun 27th, 99, 5:53 AM At the risk of offending someone, it sure appears to me that a lot of persons are dumping good oil. The big oil companies sure like that.
Been using synthetic oil since 1977 in everything I own. I have a Craftsman lawn mower that has never been changed from the synthetic in 10+ years. Still never down on oil and never been touched except to change the blade. I just want to see how long it will last.

Byfield Jun 27th, 99, 8:10 AM Interesting to see the range we all have.
Gibbons: Stop buying those Honda filers and buy a Fram. Same filter, just orange instead of blue (according to the Service Tech at the dealership here)

mike reeh Jun 27th, 99, 9:12 AM I change my oil 2 quarts at a time, every 2 weeks!
Just kidding its not that bad but I just do it whenever I cant remember the last time I did it was! approx 3 months and I put a lot of miles on it.. I had a really really educated smart auto teacher once.. He had like every certification you could possibly have and he was certified engineer and built race motors, etc etc anyways he said the best thing you can do for your engine is keep clean oil in it, if you could do it everyday then do it. very interesting....
Mike
