sure is fun having the speedo work now, seems to be pretty close to being right and i didn't realize the old girl had that much in her. i also have a new noise that i'm guessing is due to the speedo. is there anyway to tell if it's the cable or the speedometer itself? seems to make a constant bump bump? sound (too bad it's not in harmony with the cam). i remember a buddy of mine had a 69 nova that he called tweety due to the speedo cable chirpping in it, this one is not that pronounced. it either levels off at 70 mph and above or all the other noises become louder. speedo has a slight bounce around 50, but not too bad. also is there any way to grease anything before entirely replacing the cable. if it's the speedo itself, i may just live with it before spending the cash to replace it.

Have a similar problem in my car. The speedo needle bounces something awful (accompanied by a tick, tick, tick..) up until you hit 40mph, then stops, and is smooth as can be.

disconnected the cable at the speedo last night. when i took it off, i got a
lot of either graphite grease or just plain funk on my fingers. shot some
WD-40 down it. took it for a midnight spin and it definitely helped if not
cured the problem. i'll give 'er a double shot today and see if that does
the trick.
ETAYLOR72, chp has a speedo article this month. said if your speedo bounces from 0-30 they suspect it's the cable.

Mike, as I read your post, I was just gonna say, take it off and squirt it. I would have used penetrating oil ( Thrust is superb ) , it has more permanence. Make double sure the connection is tight. This can cause a chirp too.

ETTaylor, you need a new cable for sure. They're readily avaialble.

Mike,i have used lubriplate assembly grease to take away noises in speedo cable housings.Pull the cable out of the housing & give it a generous shot of grease into the housing, reinstall the cable down through it and it should solve noise problem.
