: Filter/Sock in gas tank?

Can I replace the sock like filter on the end of my pickup tube?
I no longer looks like a sock, more like a ruffled feather!
Do I really need this in the tank? Is it worth 70.00 just to replace that when the sending unit is fine?
Any input will be apreciated.

The "sock" is replaceable by itself and yes, you can get by without one. It's a pretty cheap part and if you have it in your hand, why not replace it.It just slides on the tube. Make sure if you do replace it that it clears the float arm of the sending unit or you get to do the job over!

The sock is also available at you nearest GM dealer. Ask for part #5651702. Around $7-$8. Its not to be found at any parts stores. Guess how I know that!

Just curious but where did you come up with the figure of $70??

Did that include the labor to do it?

I have done two in the last month . . . on my sons 1973 camaro and on my dads 71 olds 442 convert. Just get all the gas out of the tank you can before doing the job and it isn't too bad.

This is a good time to replace all the rubber hoses by the tank too.

BOL.(best of luck)

I didnt realize the part was avalable.
A new sending unit cost 50.00-70.00
I thought that was my only way I could fix the problem?

is your gas gauge working properly? I actually replaced both gas tanks and both sending units. The tanks were both rusty and the sending units looked horrible. The camaro one was stuck on full ( I worked it loose but replaced it anyway) and the 442 was stuck at half a tank.

It cost about $250 for each car but will be worth it not having the headach of a non-working gauge and no more clogged filters!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Good luck.
