I recently purchased a stock 4 barrel intake for my 307(replacing 2 barrel) and i'm looking for a carb. I'm going to look at the local salvage yard, i'd like to get a q-jet. Do they make them in different CFM's? What size should I get for my stock engine and how would I know if it was the right one?

They made 750 and 800 cfm Quadrajets. The only way to tell is to look down at the venturi. The difference is kind of subtle, you almost have to see them back to back to pick up on it. Generally, the early Chevrolet units were 750 cfm. Later on the emission Quadrajets were 800 cfm rated.
A 750 Quadrajet would be plenty for your application, plus you won't have all of those vacuum lines to contend with.
I don't know what year your 307 is but look for a 68-72 Quadrajet. The Chevy models have a fuel fitting that points to the side, rather than straight ahead (Buick, Olds, Pontiac).
You should be able to get one rebuilt and ready to go from your local auto store for approx. $100. You could get one cheaper at the salvage yard, or a swap meet but plan on rebuilding it before using it. If you get one to rebuild, make sure that the throttle shafts (primary and secondary) are free and don't have excessive play.

Unclepennybags, Please let me know where you can get a Q-jet for a buck. Cheapest one I can find here is $290 from a friend that works at Carquest. Thanks. Greg
