Well, the factory put a 428 and 429 in that body. The 460 is basically the same motor as the 429.

And if you can believe your eyes, the movie Cannonball (the 1st one, not Cannonball Run), had a '69 Mustang with a (purported) 427 Chevy in it. Therefore, a 502-540 would also fit. However, I'm guessing the engine pictured didn't go with the car.

In '69 you could get
the 428 Cobra Jet in a Mustang Mach 1
from the factory, "with out much work" it
seems the best route to take if thats what your talking about if your swapping the 302 or 351 out of it?

Boss 429's had modified shock towers to clear the heads. However a standard 429 or 460 is actually narrower than a 390/428 FE motor and will be easier to work on. By the way the largest motor in a 69/70 Mach 1 was a 428, in 71 you could get a 429.

We are the class of the internet!! Ask a Mustang question here and you get legitimate answers. Ask a Chevelle question at a Mustang site........

I'm proud of you guys!!!

I was going to say the 429 did not make it in the Mustang until 71, somebody beat me to it. I had to race them heads up when I was in Stock class, E stock Z/28 ran heads up with the 71 429 Mustang. It was no contest, Z car every time.

Yea it was a 2bbl cleveland the 390's could be had as a option from ford. And had more clearance than the cleveland.
I remeber that "thing" swapping ends on me several times at speeds above 90 http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif Talk about having to change your shorts.

Remember the small-block F*!? was a 60 degree angle rather than a 90 degree angle. That is relevent when you have shock towers in your way. I absolutely love Chevelles, but the '69/'70 Mach 1 was great looking and was one of the only cars to look great with rear window louvers. An Australian block 351 would make a great place to start a Boss 351-spec engine to give a Chevelle some competition. If you run a Windor small-block, swallow your pride & run Chevy valves in it. Variety is the spice of life.
Of course the Chevy small-blocks and big-blocks are the intelligent bargains of the Hot Rod crowd.

My buddy from work is a Mustang nut. Has 67 S-code 390 fastback, his high school 69 coupe and a 69 Mach 1 found by me($1250 running) last year. His comment is the same as above that the 429/460 would be easier than 390/428 FE. Good Luck. I hopefully will get a grudge match against my buddy at this season's test/tune. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Good Luck

Many long years ago I owned an R-code (428 Cobra Jet Ramair)'69 Mach 1 with a full serving of factory performance options. It was a fine tire frying machine that was spooky to drive in the rain.

I had a neighbor who dropped a regular 429 (same physical size as 460 or the newer Ford Motorsports 514?) into his '70 Mustang. Not a hard swap at all, he used a motor plate instead of motor mounts. Everything seemed to bolt up without much fuss.

I have seen a 390 shoehorned into a 68 fastback, but I have to agree with Jeff in that the 429/460 would be an easier swap. The 390 block is a very tall design, with the oil pan mating surface below the crankshaft. The pan mating surface on the 429 is at the main journal centerline, which makes for a block with less height.
