: Blown head?

When I first bought my car, the engine oil was like water, a thin black water. I changed it, but since then I've been missing oil, its not burning it, and its not leaking. Also when i topped off the radiator, the first time I ran it after that anti-freeze was coming out of every hose and seal in the cooling system, and the engine has been overheating very much, up to 230 when idling. I've been told by two people now that I may have a bad head gasket(s). And that It may have damaged the combustion chambers if anti-freeze got into them. If this is true, would it make more sense to fix the current engine, (350ci) or buy a used one from a junkyard? The engine is not original.

Check your antifreeze and see if there is oil in it, that would be my guess as to where it's going. If you want to redo the engine, tear down the engine you have, get the block, crank, and rods inspected and checked for cracks etc. If at least the block and crank are good, then rebuild the one you have. If a head is cracked it's easy to find another small block head. The shop I was getting work done by even just had small block heads already rebuilt that they sold to customers.

Anyway, I would tear down the engine and check those pieces and then go from there.

Well, I might be able to buy a 350 engine that just needs new main bearings. My car right now runs... kinda. And I need to drive it. So I was thinking rebuild the new engine with new main bearings, then one weekend put the performance parts off the old one, and drop it in. Good idea?
