i have a chance to pick up a totaly rebuilt 10bolt posi w/5.13 gears never on car since rebuild, i have a 200-4r tranny but it's my daily driver. i need some input, it's going to be in around $350 plus 1/2 shipping costs, i just need some input since it's a daily driver but only 5 miles a day, and i like to take a few trips to dallas/arlington a week 100+ miles

If it's a good rebuilt posi that doesn't sound too bad, but on the other hand I've never bought one before, not up to that stage yet.

The gears though sound a bit high for the street on those long hauls. Actually scratch that, you got an overdrive that puts you in the low 3.x range, plenty fine if you ask me. If my math is right, that's a 3.43 effective rear ratio in overdrive. From what I see, most people tend to stay in the 4 range, like 4.11 with an overdrive. Was that the cost for drum to drum?

NOW that's steep!!!!!!even with the overdrive, that has to be like,4.10's or so(not sure of overdrive ratio on 200R4)
Personally,I'd pass on something like that.Now,3.73's or 4.10's with an R4,that would be NICE.I had an 85 Monte SS,chucked the 305 in favor of a pretty much stock 350 with a 200R4 and 3.73's,and man,it was perfect.I don't think the tranny would appreciate the 5.13's either. That would be like driving around in low range w/a 4WD.

Nope, Nada, not me. John, have you ever ridden in a car with low gears? 3 months w/ 4.88's did it for me. The lowest I will go now is 3.73, and that is with a tall 70 series tire.
Oh, I have a friend in Chorpus Christi with a ' 69 Camaro 3.36 posi 8.2 for sale. You can get it for @$175, and put the guts in your housing! That is a much better gear.Email me if interested.

NO!!!!

The fact that you have an overdrive transmission may make it more reasonable for the street, think about the fact that the 200 4r transmission also has a deeper first gear!

Of course, you could use the car for pulling out tree stumps on week-ends.

I ran 4.88's for a while on the street a few years back, and nothing launches like that looooooowwww gear, and the o/d may work out.

Even with the O/D, that gear ratio is kind of steep. A lot of guys I know who are running on the 1/8th mile drag strips at Kennedale and in Denton like the 5:13s. But these guys built their cars for the strip. I just can't see it on a car that's mainly street driven. If this 10 bolt has the 8.5 inch ring gear and the carrier is the right thickness and the clutches are in good shape, it may be worth buying with the intention of installing a higher ratio (lower numerically) ring and pinion set. I can't remember exactly what ratios work with which carrier, but I'm sure someone here has that info

I had an OD with 3.73 gears. That was hard enough to hook up in first with a mild 350 ( about 340hp ) I would not even try it with those gears.

What do I think? Well, as long as you have about 9,500 rpm on tap and a powerglide trans it'll be no problem - unless you do any driving without drag slicks mounted, or if you have any thoughts of anything driveable on the street.

Plus that's a lot of torque to be sending to a 10 bolt. I'm betting you grenade that sucker in less than a month!

Chev-hell, only if it's cheap enough so you can put 3.90s in. (or whatever).

The 8.5 ten bolt will take the torque no problem. I knew a guy who had a 550 horse 454 and 4.56 gears and had no problem. Those gears would be fun to drive on the street but not on the highway even with o/d.

Id go for it. If you are only moving a short distance daily, what difference would it make? I had 4:88 with no od and 5 miles seemed to be doable, but nothing further.

Like the earlier posts said, if you dont like it, evenually get a steeper gear.

I think you are ***NUTS***! LOL
Just invest in a 12 bolt- maybe evne a later model one with rear discs! Or if you are not about authenticity, a custom Dana or Ford 9" rear. You'll need all the stoppin power you can get being motivated by 5.xx gears!

well yall convinced me that it's NOT for me BUT i may buy it anyway if i can get it cheap enough since it's completely rebuilt and run it for a few weeks until i can put in some 411's or 373's which would cost around 300 so if i get it for 300 plus 300 for new gears i have 600 in it. that sounds pretty reasonable don't yall think? since most places are $1000+ to rebuild a posi and change gears.

i have a 383 making about 420 horsepower. i plan to pick up a 200r4 soon. i'm debating on what gears to put in the rear. right now most of my driving is from school and back which is 2 miles away. i was thinking either 4.10 or 4.56. how are 4.56 on the street? what would be better in the 1/4? thanks for the help.
