I've located two 12 bolt posi rear ends for sale but I'm not sure which is a better deal. It's for a '69 with a 350 and an M21

#1 is a '68 rebuilt by an experienced rear end builder recommended by a TC'er; case is stripped, sand blasted, and primed; has new ring and pinion (US Gear); new bearings, seals, and wheel cylinders; new upper control arm bushings pressed in; choice of gears; 1-3 months delivery
Cost: $1,100 plus 150 shipping

#2 is a '72 rebuilt by an experienced mechanic, not repainted; new bearings and seals; salvaged from a wrecked circle track race car but was not damaged; 3.31:1 gears; ready to pick up locally
Cost: $750 (no shipping)

Both are claimed to have no defects and be ready to bolt in. I'd sure like to go for the cheaper one but I'd like advice from you experts first.

Thanks,
Paul

Are 3.31 gears what you want? If not, the choice is simple, go for #1. It would cost you the difference just to swap gears.

Yes, forgot to say that 3.31 is just what I'm looking for.

Circle track stuff is USED HARDER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE...axle and/or gear failure could be impending...if you can afford it, go for #1.

If option #1 includes new axles I would say go for it. If it uses original or used axles I would want to inspect them before installation or ask for a price with new axles. New mosier engineering axles are about $225 plus $15 for wheel studs. You should be able to find a bare case for about $100 the installation kit with bearings and seals also $100 control arm bushing kit $100 New ring and pinion 3.31 to 1 $150 plus posi unit say $300 = $990 plus labor to set it up . $1150 isn't bad if it includes new axles.

Are you sure you want to use a M21 with a small block and 331 gears, thats a very tall 1st gear ratio.Mosier axels are a good choice.

The small block and a M-21 combined with a 3.31 is pushing it, especially if you have a big cam, and soggy bottom end. As for the used one, there is a 90% chance one axle is scored, and will need replaced. You can get a pair of replacements for around $235 plus tax from several places.
