: What does everyone think the best spark plug is?
michaelem Aug 6th, 00, 10:52 PM I just installed a new msd 6A MSD kit in my 1968 el camino. I'm going to upgrade the ignition even more with new 8.5 msd spark plug wires. I just want to get some feedback on what everyone thinks the best spark plug is? Right now I'm running number 2 heat range AC rapid fire plugs. They work really good but my friend was tell me that should try Autolite double platinum plugs. Has anyone had good luck with the Autolite platinum plugs? Or is there a different brand I should use with this msd ignition? I also was reading that spark plugs with the 6A box should be gapped between .050 and .060 thousands. Is that correct?

kevin d Aug 7th, 00, 2:52 AM Not sure about the gap for your set up. I'm fond of Bosch Platinums. With HEI my gap is .045. I like the Bosch, haven't had a problem in 3 years in the chevelle or any other car.

onabudget Aug 7th, 00, 7:50 AM I like AC Plugs the best, I can't fit them with my headers, so I am Using Accell Shortys
Rule of thunb for heat range is with evry 1 point increase in compression ratio, go one heat range colder.
In AC numbers a 45 is stock for 8-8.5
Colder use a 44 for 9-9.5
use 43 for 10-10.5
If its an in-between you may have to play around with trial and error and read your plugs.
For Gap, if you have a stock coil w/ HEI and the 6A, 45 is good, if you are using an MSD coil you can bump it up to what they reccomend.
I am using a MSD in cap HEI coil my gap is 50.

working on it Aug 7th, 00, 9:55 AM Kevin-I second your vote on Bosch Platinums.I've tried various ACs( 43's to 46's), some Autolites, and NGKs and Accels, but the best I've found for all-around use is the stock #4222(can't ever remember the # stamped on the plug itself). It is the 18mm type(13/16" wrench),comes with a .060" gap, and works better with my "fuelie" 462 heads than any others. The .060 gap seems just right for the track with my my Hyfire IV-C,but I reduce the gap to .050 for off-season use.I like the cut-back electrode, and the self-cleaning tip resists MMT build-up (from octane boosters).Other good points as well.I have always run AC plugs(since '65),and was reluctant to switch, but they worked best on my 327.I still run AC R45TS 0n my'69 350 truck (new crate motor,World heads, small plug),and haven't needed to switch.Yet.

I prefer AC Delco.
I've used many different plugs throughout my life and found alot of hype, alot of good and alot of varaiances within the same brand. But at least here you'll get a general consenses of the most popular brand.

Big James 4XL Aug 7th, 00, 4:37 PM I never have had much luck with AC plugs, sorry to say. Years ago I saw Bill Jenkins using Autolite plugs in one of his Camaros at a match race near here. I tried them in the 396 Camaro I had then and now I still use Autolite or Motorcraft plugs. The 350(flat top pistons, standard heads, mild cam, 750 holley, Mallory dist& coil) in my daily driven Elcamino seems to like the Motorcraft ASF52C plugs better than the equivalent Autolite. I use 7 of these and one shorty Accel 576S. Checked these plugs after about 12,000 miles gapped em and stuck em back in.
OrrieG Aug 7th, 00, 4:50 PM It may not be true to the faith but I've had the best luck with Autolite plugs too. I've ran them in my high mileage 283's, Accord, kids Tarass and 67 Mustang. Lawnmower and tiller may even have them too.

leeds Aug 7th, 00, 8:25 PM My friend, who builds race bikes, says autolites come in the vance&hines heads. I run autolites, maybe I should get those fancy platinum ones from bosch (aren't those for fuel injection?)
JWagner Aug 7th, 00, 9:36 PM After a lot of experimenting, I believe that ABC's are the best: Anything But Champion.
If you need short plugs to clear the headers, try the Bosch plugs as they are much shorter than AC's ( and are on sale at Autozone for 59 cents.).
michaelem Aug 7th, 00, 9:44 PM Wow! Thanks to all the responces about my spark plug question! I've got my heart set on the double platinum plugs from Autolite. I think I'll give those a try with my new MSD ignition. Next question, what about heat range? Right now I'm running AC rapid fire plugs with a number 2 heat range. Anyone know the correct heat range number for the Autolite double platinum for my 350 engine?

Mkrauser Aug 8th, 00, 2:55 PM I am not sure where Champion got such a bad rap but their Racing Plugs 670 V59C are the best we've used in our race motors.
Take another look at Champion they are now owned by Federal Mogul who make great quality auto parts. Moog Suspension, Federal Mogul Bearings, Wagner Brakes, Anco Wipers.
I have run all the big names AC, Autolite, NGK. For me the Champions are the best...MK

81ElCamino Aug 8th, 00, 8:11 PM I have had a serious Mental Block against Champions. In a two stroke race bike that wouldn't run right, I pulled (and threw as far as I could) a clean looking Champion, and stuck a crummy looking NGK in, and we got 4th.
Now with this RPM equipped small block, Champion is the recommended plug. And the 8 in there are just groovy! So maybe the FM ownership has really turned them around.
Food for thought.
