: It runs without the key? (long)

The saga continues on this car. I had hooked up the electric choke yesterday and while I was at it. I decided to pull the defunct tach and aftermarket guages out of the car.

When pulling the tach it was wired into a truck running light under the dash ???? with a switch??? The gauges did not have the senders hooked up, only a wire for the lights to come on??? After getting it all out the car. The car would not start?????

I went under the dash and checked all of the wires and the previous owner had just stripped back wire and wrapped the other wire, bare, around it. It pulled everything that did not look like factory wiring and cut or taped everything off. It started then, so I thought problem solved!

The wife called me this morning and said the car was hard to start. This is probably my fault for hooking up the choke to a 12 volt continuous supply. She did manage to get the car started and it died. Again probably due to the choke already being open.

But when she got home and shut the key off the car kept running for about 30 seconds? She restarted the car and the same thing, it kept running????

Any ideas???

Well, as for the run on I'm not totally sure of your problem there, maybe the starter relay sticking?
As for the choke, get it OFF of that continuous 12v. You will melt the spring right off of that thing. It needs to be on a switched circuit that is only activated when the key is in the "ON" position. I ran mine off of the alternator wire.

Get a test bulb or voltmeter and check the positive side of the coil. If it is an HEI, check the wire going to the cap for the coil.
Start the car and then shut it off. The bulb should go out or the meter go to zero volts.
If it does not, you have effectively hot wired your car. That is, you have 12 volts to the coil no matter what the key position. The only thing the ignition switch is doing is activating the solenoid.
If the bulb does go out when you shut the key off, but the engine keeps running, you basically have a diesel going there. Run better gas or change plug settings.

Hope this helps.

Got into the car last night. When I looked under the dash.............WOW!!! look at all of those splices. It appears the dash area has been visited previousy, possibly by aliens. I tore out the POS radio and the "expert" installation and saw more than I cared to see.

I took twelve volts from the fuse block and used a switch to cut the power going to the ignition system. I use the key for security and to start the car and the switch to shut it off. This summer the dash will have to come out for a new harness.

Thanks for everyones help
