Does anyone have any facts on how many 67 SS 396 375hp coupe 4spd were made? Or just 67 SS 396 375hp?? Thanks for any help!

If I remember correctly, the number that was being thrown around while Skip Cain was documenting these cars was 712 (total L78 cars). Don't ask me to back it up.

Could you get SS's in coupe form, or just hardtop and convertible?

612 L-78's is probably the correct number. Several years ago Skip and I were looking into this. In 66 and 68-70 Chevy offered the 375HP option but they dropped the option in 67. But there was a blank space on the order form in which you could write in L-78 and get it. It seems 612 people or dealers knew to do that.

Skip wanted to come and see my car because it has the L-78. He was extremely interested in these cars. The problem with mine is the numbers don't match. All the dates on the engine are ok. We know it is a 67 L-78. It also has the correct EG on the block. But the vin numbers don't match. The number on the tag is 138177Z153257. The engine has 153475. Thats a 218 difference. Now think about that. What is the chance of this car being built in Atlanta, shipped to and sold at Kirk-Davis Chevrolet in Sylva, NC, and the engine being replaced with another L-78 with the difference in serial numbers just 218? Skip and I came to the conclusion that something happened at the plant. Stranger things have happened. Of course I would like to think I have an original 67 L-78, but I guess we will never know. Sorry if I rambled there.

It is unlikely but possible, I once had a 70 Firebird Formula with an incorrect 400. I wanted to restore the car. I found a parts car, another 70 Formula. It turned out the two cars were built within a day and were within 200 in cerial numbers.

I also agree with Skip's figures. As I understand, the L78 was dropped, then very quietly re-instated later in the year. Chevy often made mid-year revisions. As for the availability, it would have been offered (under the table) on any '67 Chevelle or El Camino that offerd any other 396. That means SS396 coupes and convertibles, and base and Custom ElCamino (model 13480 & 13680). Although it would have been possible to purchase one in Canada, it would be a U.S. built car as far as we know. GM Canada dropped the solid lifter big blocks from Canadian production after the '66 models. I don't even think the Canadian Chevelles and Beaumonts ever offered them; just the Big Chevy and Canadian Big Pontiacs. The '66 Chevy II & Acadian offerd the L79 too! Rare cars, all!

Interesting. I looked into the possibility that some '70 LS6 coupes were built in Canada and imported into the US.

One person who worked at the Oshawa plant indicated that LS6 cars were built there. But that claim was based upon 30-year-old memories only.

I think it is possible, but I have no hard proof.

A while back ('92) I chatted with a guy at a swap meet for a couple of hours about cars. He said that he bought a '69 COPO new out of Central Chev-Olds in London, Ontario. He echoed what I had heard before - that the solid lifter big blocks Chevelles were imported from the states, and that he believed the COPO Chevelles all came from Baltimore. What is interesting is that in 1970 Oshawa produced GTO Judges that year only (and only one Judge with the 455). You never know; my grade 2 teacher in 1970 drove a new LS6. I wonder where it was built?
