I am looking to buy a new 350 to replace my current 307 in my 70 malibu. What needs to be done to exchange the engines (engine mounts?). Also can I get any recomendations as to where to buy a new 350. I have seen ads for a 190 horsepower for about a grand. I am looking to spend about 1000 to 1500. I plan on putting on an edelbrock preformer intake and edelbrock carb. I would like 300 horse if at all possible. Any sugestions would be greatly appriciated I am new to the bussiness and I really need help. Thanks

GM crate motors.....there are several small block varieties to choose from ...I am sure that there is one in your price range/performance level. They even come with a warranty. Go to your local GM dealer and get one of their performance parts catalogs.

Should just be a bolt in....same motor mounts and accessories brackets, etc.

Check every page in the performance magazines such as Super Chevy, Hot Rod, Chevy Hi-Performance, etc. There are always venders advertising good buys on Chev crate motors. I have seen new 350s for $1100-1400. and up.

I HAVE GOT YOUR SOLUTION!!! I just did the EXACT same thing. I have absolutely NO regrets.

I did a lot of research before selecting the motor. A crate from GM will never get you 300HP. That 350 is the same motor that they use in the little S10 pickups. 8+:1 compression. MAYBE 185HP max!

After lots of research, I selected an ATK motor (http://www.atk-engines.com). Check them out including the "factory tour". I got the beefier motor (9.5:1). It has got a "little" cam, nothing too radical. It is a long block with all the "tin" (chrome). Good new parts (quality rings, pistons, oil pump etc.) At $1800, it will alter your budget but if ~300HP is where you are headed, then $1000-$1500 wasn't realistic anyway. (By adding a carb to that 190HP motor will never get you to 300HP.)

Engine mounts are the same (if they are OK).
The pulleys are probably different. Water pump, alternator & bracket should be no problem. Your original exhaust and manifolds should be fine, if you want to keep them. The distributor is fine, just tricky. Ya gotta get it back in the same place for it to run. (Got HEI?)

The manifold is a good choice. You might go with the Holly carb. They're simpler (fixed jets). I went with an LT1 manifold (Holly's ripoff of the GM Z28 manifold) and their 600CFM electric choke carb. (Don't over carb!) If you don't already have the setup, try Summit Racing. ~$320 for the whole deal, including the air cleaner.

BUY THE BOOK "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy"!!! Follow it EXACTLY on how to do the manifold. Use good (FelPro) gaskets ($12) and the right RTV. DON'T RUSH!

Moving to the 4B, you will need a new throttle bracket ($5) and probably a new throttle cable ($20). A "universal" bracket works and looks great. Try Year One for the cable.

Do it right! Invest just a few bucks into stainless steel bolts for the manifold and valve covers. (Good hardware store, $. Not mail order or speed shop, $$$.)

Next, go with a good dual exhaust. Aluminized pipe all the way back with cross over and Flow Masters, ~$350. With headers, your should just about hit your 300HP.

I'm hear to tell you, it looks, sounds, and runs GREAT!

Email me and I'd be glad to help further. (Want pictures? I have them for the manifold install.)

Your stock pulleys should be O.K., you'll be using your old water pump and accessiories anyway. Maybe I missed something but since when did Chevy put any small block in an S-10?

The 195HP Vortec in a S-10 is a V-6. For a couple of years they were 205HP. Anyhow, a fresh 300HP 350 for $1000 is probably a bit optimistic. But if you can swing it, the GM crate of choice is the way to go. Warranty and its new. Like stated above either go to a dealer and get a catalog or look in Super Chevy, etc. Lots of dealers advertize. They can also recommend the proper carb for you intended use. Most come with the intake installed. Very easy swap. Use the right tools and go slow, you'll learn lots.

Yeah, I thought it kinda funny when the Chevy guy said that the 350 motor went into the S10 but then again, who was I to argue.

BTW, the ATK comes with a 12K mile, 12 mo. mile warranty. 3 year if you get the lower compression version.

Look in this Months edition of CAR CRAFT magazine. They have an article in there about building up a 350/350HP motor. I don't know if you are interested in doing it this way but I just though I would let you know. thanks
