Hello everybody i have a 70 SS 396 and getting ready to have new exhaust installed. Was curious to know what the best size pipe to use 2.25 diameter or 2.5 inch.I have stock manifolds, and will probaly use a low tone turbo muffler.Let me know what you have and how it sounds,Thanks.

hi,i have a '64 malibu with a .060 396 ,i run a 2.5in exhaust all the way to rear dumping out the stock way (but just barely visible from the sides) and i run dnyomax super turbos ,they have a nice low tone around town and they mellow out on the freeway, but sound is different to everybody.the big difference is that i run hooker competition headers(2in tubes 3.5in collector)but i like the way it sounds.

Brian, with stock manifolds,2.25" will be just fine.I don't think you will be able to tell the diff.

Brian.

I second the 2.25" pipe. Have you considered a cross-over "H" pipe??

What difference would i notice with a cross over pipe, never realy new what it did ,does it make it flow more evenly ?

It act to stabillize the "back-pressure" seen by the manifolds. I can't really explain it all to well. I do know that it will actually increase you HP and make things sound better. do a search on the H-pipe in the propper forum(s). see what you can find. there is also an X-pipe. that is kinda the latest thing.

The factory exhaust system is 2.50" lead pipes and 2.25" tailpipes.I run those exact size pipes with 3 chamber Flowmasters with 2"primary tube headers.Sounds nice, but a little loud @ cruisin' speed.(4.10's don't help, but it is fun)
