: GRILLES FOR MY 69
1969BIGBLOCK Mar 9th, 00, 8:48 AM Is there a difference between the grills on a ss and non ss 69 malibu, besides the ss emblem, i have a 69 that someone before me cloned into a ss and i am doing it a little different, i am shaving all the emblems off the car, and the antenns and locks, and i want a plain grill in the front with nothing in the middle, the car has a ss in the grill now, i think that the original one says malibu? if anyone could send me some pics of the front end of a 69, the different kinds, that would be great, thanks for all the help, geoff
There isn't too much difference in them other than the blue bowtie or the SS emblems.
I have the wrong one on my car I think and I hear it's the only one available now.
The difference is in the horizontal bar that the emblem is mounted on I think.
One has a chrome trim on it and the other is painted with the same deminsions as the other including the chrome.
I bought N.O.S. chrome for mine but it will not fit since the bar is too thick.
my 69 with the wrong grill ? (http://members.primary.net/~cys.dean/69_front.jpg)

Keane Mar 9th, 00, 5:05 PM I am not sure about the 69's, but I think there is a difference between the 70's Malibu and ss grills. Most original malibus that I see have a metal finish to the grills, and the SS have a blacked out grill. Mine has a blacked out grill (SS), and I am wanting the other kind. I have never seen these ones for sale though, so I am at a loss. Any thoughts to this anyone?
So what I am saying is that I really dont know, I am confused also, and I will shut-up now.
Looked at all of the featured cars real quick, and all the 69 malibus and ss grills appear to be the same. The 70's dont, look at this car:

He has the grill with the metal finish to it, but I cant find these for sale, are they the same as a SS and painted that way?? I want one, anyone help me?
Sorry to jump in on your question 1969bigblock. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

RatMotor69 Mar 9th, 00, 5:48 PM There is a difference in '69 grilles, but not SS vs. other models.
13637 Malibu Sport coupes received a grille which featured a bolt-on stainless insert in the middle of the grille which ran horizontal between the high-beams. The "lesser" models received a grille with the likeness of that insert "molded in" and was not shiney like the insert. The NOS version available now, as far as I know, has the molded in insert.
There is a difference in the paint treatment between SS grilles and grilles for other models. The fins in the grille where painted totally black while Malibus and other models were silver on the outer edges of the fins.
Hope this helps! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Can we somehow index Rick's '69 grille description for the archives? That's about as perfect a description as any I've seen

Cardiac Mar 10th, 00, 4:06 AM My old 69 Elky was painted Bolaro Red and I didn't like the blue Bow-Tie grill emblem, so I mounted a "Silver" one from a 70 or so Elcamino. Looked http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

RC 69 Mar 10th, 00, 8:45 AM oops! As far as the paint treatment being different on a Malibu compared to an SS car, I'm not sure about that. My 69 Malibu has the stainless insert bolted on the middle of the grille with blue bow tie. It also has silver on the edges of the grille fins.

BLURAT, As far as I know and looking at the '69 Chevelle sales brochure, Deane and RatMotor69 are 100% correct. The grille without provisions for a center horizontal trim bar ( trim molded into grille) only came on the much less produced 300 Deluxe model. I can't imagine why it's the only one available new now, but it is.
