rick Dec 10th, 99, 6:13 PM Gotta put my $.02 in here http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif . 454, I bet it was mailed in a plain white envelope with $.55 postage. And you probably just dropped it in the mail box - am I right so far?
FYI - once you drop a letter in the drop box, it is very likely that NO human hand touches it until the mailman puts it in your mail box. Machines do it all, from cancelling, to directing it to your zip code, to sorting and ordering each individual route.
DG - your description of the envelope matches many that we see every night. The machines have several "14" bull wheels" that the envelopes travel around to change direction. An ordinary envelope has no problem traveling thru BUT anything solid causes problems.
At best it just jams the machine and messes up the envelope and 3 or 4 behind it. At worst it tears up the envelope and contents. Sometimes it rips the envelope open and the contents fall out, but the envelope continues on. We are a small office and have 2 people who's full time job is to try to reassemble these letters, match up contents or just forward the "remains" to an identifiable address. We also have a crew of 4 or 5 who "cull" the mail before it enters the machine. They remove envelopes/items that look like they may cause problems, but somethings get past them.
I don't think the card was swiped. Lost in the mail is probably a more accurate description.
Some of the items I have removed from machines include: money (change & paper), pencils, pens, cassettes, jewelry, handkerchiefs, candy (esp at valentines & mothers day), a hearing aid, keys, and probably a few other things that escape me right now.
Anything like this that needs to be mailed should be put in one of those small yellow blister pack type envelopes. These are not handled in the same manner as envelopes and should have no problem making it to their destination.
I now this doesn't make the loss any easier, but I hope it explains things - sorta.

Dean Dec 11th, 99, 11:31 AM I hate to tell you this 454, but Chevelle Tech is actually not a general forum, it is for Chevelle Technical questions and answers.
That is why it is called Chevelle Tech

ok, sorry dean, i tried to delete my message up top (so it would delete the thread) but it didnt work.
Philip Dec 13th, 99, 12:57 AM Rick, Thanks for the insight on the mail handling machines. I try to use the padded envelopes for sending small parts. I have recieved one of those "this is all that is left of your letter" packages from the USPS.
BTW I have a pretty good cookie recipe I could share and if you cut them out in the shape of an El Camino they taste better.
