: Rockwell or Chevy??
Horsepower69 Mar 8th, 00, 1:17 PM I'm planning to build a truck with 48 X 31 inch tires. The gear ratio is 7.18:1. The engine is a 502. Which differential is more reliable and gets more power to the wheels, The chevy 14 bolt or the rockwell 12.5??? Can you please give an accurate answer if possible.
Thank You
Doug Garland Mar 8th, 00, 1:22 PM HHHMMMM!!! Haven't we discussed this before, say , a couple of days ago? www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/000111.html (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/000111.html)
I like Tedster's Comments! And atleast, put it in Engines and Drivetrain!

JWagner Mar 8th, 00, 1:29 PM So far as I know, there has not been a Rockwell axle in a Chevelle. Is yours foreign-built perhaps? I would avoid a ratio in the 7's as it will not hold up very well with any power put to it. To get a ratio in the 7's it would require a 6 or 7 tooth pinion to fit in the typical axle; the pinions with that few teeth are usually good for only a couple of passes. (The transaxle Tempests of the early 60's used 8-tooth pinions and got changed after just a few hard passes) I would say forget the whole project. Just get a 12 bolt and go with that.
fastburn Mar 8th, 00, 2:03 PM Horsepower, either diff is going to deliver the power to the ground. HP loss through the diff will not be much different.
The question is, how long will they last? What kind of engine/power you got?
We've built several trucks, none as radical as yours though. Feel free to email me off-line so we don't clutter the CHEVELLE board.

blorenz1 Mar 8th, 00, 5:32 PM Don't get me wrong, but this is team CHEVELLE, but at any rate I say go for the full floating 14 bolt.

Once you have made up your mind, facts are but a mere annoyance.
Chris R Mar 13th, 00, 4:32 PM Isnt Rockwell that millionare guy that offered to marry some stranger on TV a while ago... Oh, wait. That doesnt have anything to do with Chevelles either...
Chris R.
Horsepower69 Mar 14th, 00, 10:41 AM CHRIS R., I found your comment extremely rude and I'd appreciate it if you'd know your role and shut your hole.........OOPS!! This has nothing to do with chevelles either. I sure hope it doesn't upset CHRIS R.
blorenz1 Mar 14th, 00, 5:17 PM Temper, Temper...
Quadzilla Mar 14th, 00, 7:31 PM Hey blorenz1, the 14 bolt full floating GMC 2spd axle belongs under Quadzilla along with the the 5th wheel and the "birdbath" roof car of Droptop.. hee hee hee

Joe454 Mar 14th, 00, 10:05 PM Horsepower69,
I don't know if Chris R will get upset but, maybe other members might get upset that you are trying to turn this site into a second class BB with your comments. Normally, we don't tell each other to "shut your hole". Chris has been here since 98, I think he knows his role by now.

BLURAT Mar 15th, 00, 12:36 AM I could tell that Chris R was joking....I wasn't quite sure about Horsepower69's response to him...but RIGHT ON to Joe454...And alway's remember what Mr.Cain might wonder....

Philip Mar 15th, 00, 1:03 AM Pete, I don't think anyone is being rude. Most of your posts had nothing to do with Chevelles. A lot of what if's involving Olds, Pontiac's and Mopars. You were treated with "courtesy and co-operation is sincerely appreciated" and these are your words. This is afterall a Chevelle site and everyones questions are treated the same, but if you post topics unrelated to the theme you will have to expect some good natured ribbing. If you have been anywhere else on the web posting off topic questions I'm sure you know what RUDE is.

Horsepower69 Mar 15th, 00, 4:18 PM Elcaminos are slow..............especially those made in 64........
Buddy Mar 15th, 00, 4:54 PM Horsepower-If you are planning on asking questions in the future I suggest you calm down and forget the slamming....or else Al will ban your I.P.
Dean Mar 15th, 00, 7:00 PM I think Pete is just trying to see if he can get us riled up. (and probably LHAO)
Right Pete ?
We should feel complimented that he came here to ask questions even if he does post them in the wrong place.

Philip Mar 15th, 00, 11:37 PM Actually you got that one right. My 64 has a 6 in it, puts out less than 100 horsepower at the flywheel. Then runs thru a powerglide, to 3.08 gears and 28" tall tires. So yes it is slow.
Doug Garland Mar 15th, 00, 11:53 PM And all these years I thought Rockwell was that guy that sang the song " Somebody's Watching Me" in the early '80's! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
Besides, both Dean, and Phillip are moderators, so if he gets too bad, they will just delete his posts! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Oh, and congrats on the Moderator name badge Phillip. I just noticed it yesterday!

Philip Mar 16th, 00, 1:02 AM Thanks Doug. I'm not sure I can delete posts. I volunteered to help out with sorting thru the old Chevelle Tech and moving posts to the Top Tech Archive. I figure after reading 38,000 posts I'll either be smarter or totally confused. Probably the latter. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Philip

Philip Mar 16th, 00, 5:30 PM Horsepower69 is Pete. At least that is how he signed some of his other posts. I can understand someone being hesitant at first to fill out the info in their profile, but after they post for awhile it makes me wonder why. Philip
