Just curious as to if anyone here is running a modified 6 cyl in their Chevelle or other early GM. If so, I'd like to hear what you've done,, and what the results were.

I know that there are a number of companies offering parts (Clifford, Stovebolt), and it seems that lots of people know someone who's done it, but I can't ever find anyone with first hand experience.

I am currently in the process of rebuilding my 292CID for my '68 Stepside. I have had a fair amount of experience with the 250's and 292's. This engine when it is finished will have 9.8:1 compression, four-barrel manifold, full length tri-Y headers, a lot of head work (larger stainless valves, roller-rockers, pc seals, port and bowl work), Full GM-HEI ignition, etc, etc.... I just wanted to be different. For more specific questions feel free to e-mail me!

A few years back,Car Craft ran some Article series called,"Real street Eliminator",one of the cars there was a 1966 Nova,which was a father&son project.They were running a 301
I-6,with a Clifford Manifold with a blower on top!I it was quite fast,i dont
however recall the quartermile time though, but it was in the neighboorhood of 12-13teens.Anyone tried to run a blower on a I-6? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif The later I-6 was with a cast in manifolds (1974 onwards ,i think)not much to work on there, unless you had the earlier head.

I did up a 250 6 years ago, clifford intake with 390 4bbl, two piece headers, good cam, etc....total waste of time, got milage of a v8 without the low end torque...pulled it and went with a 400 smallblock, kicked the 250s rear even before any mods were made to it.

I saw a 66 or 67 Nova w/ a 6 and a blower. It looked cool and sounded like crap.

Raced a 250 Chevelle many years ago in brackets and NHRA T/SA. Basically stock with headers, 4 barrel and slightly warm cam. Ran high 15's. Complete waste of money. Put your money into a 350. It's cheaper and faster.

I used to build pre-62 6s (235-261). Last one was a .030 over 261 with Corvette 3x1 bls and a Corvette dual exhaust manifold.
Does that count?
I still have the Corvette 6 dual ex manifold.

A buddy (guy who does rearends for us- and whos sister I nearly asked to marry me) has a 250 in a '65 Pickup that runs pretty darn good when not broken. And a friend of buddy has a '6? ford falcon with a hot 6, I rode in it... impressive!

It's all in what you want to do!!!! I want cubes!!!

I've always liked different stuff. A built six sounds like fun and would be cool. I saw a netsite totally dedicated to chevy straight sixes, below are excerpts from what I can find;

Thanks. I've been to most of the sites on the net that deal with these things. It's not that I really want to do this, alothough I think it would be pretty cool from the gee-wiz standpoint. I'd just like to hear about any actual experiences people have with a built 6. Sure, the shops offer info, but they're also in the business of selling parts.

FYI: Clifford has a site - Clifford Performance (http://www.cliffordperformance.com/)

And thanks for all the input guys.

I built a 250 using TRW forged pistons, 1.94 X 1.6 valves, some porting, draw-through Buick V6 turbocharger, through TH350 with Vega converter, in a 64 Nova for my son.

It has been very dependable [over 100K miles], fairly economical [20+ highway], and pretty quick. We installed an adjustable boost control, and a water injection system powered by the boost so it increases as manifold pressure goes up. Normal boost is 7 lbs, but it can be turned up to 16-17 lbs and get pretty exciting. The total cost in 1988 for the turbo, rebuild, and transmission swap was $1100.

In the late 60's there was a mechanic (Geralds Automotive in Eugene,Oregon) that fan a 6 cyl rail. If I remember right it started life as a 301(?)GMC block that was bored, cammed, and may have ran a fuel injection system. I did a search and couldn't find his business, he is probably retired. I remember that it ran strong enough to embarass a few small blocks.

Will a six ever run as strong as a SBC or BB? No. Can they make power? Yes, they still run at Bonneville and set class records. And before the SBC was introduced in 55 6 cyl Chevys were competitive and dominated many races especially in the road racing arena (Pan-Am series in mexico for example).

I've kept the 235 from my truck thinking that if I ever built the 34 roadster I want I would use it to be different also. There are plenty of speed parts available for them.
