ok, with some dexterity i found the timing tab behind the waterpump. now, how do i get a gun on it without killing myself? i tried it in both day/night and couldn't see the line. anybody done this before?

That is tricky balancing yourself over the fan and trying to reach around all the belts. What vehicle is it in? Usually I had to move the purge valve and the A/C hoses out of the way and then you can at least see it. Mark the line on the balancer with a bright color. On new balancers I paint the groove white before I install them. I use the yellow crayon from a tire shop. If you look closely at the timing tab there is a notch that is deeper than the rest. That is 0, each notch going towards the passenger side is 2 degrees more advance. So it isn't necessary to have to be able to read the numbers. Good luck and watch out for the fan. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

thanks...yeah, it's in the suburban. i'm going to try to fasten the gun in there somehow so i can look without fear of death in the belts. thanks for the info on the tab, that's a big help. i tried a white crayon and yellow, maybe i'll use paint. i don't think my 1965 timing gun is very bright either.

MIght consider getting one of the newer dial type timing lights. Then you can put a pointer and balancer line anywhere it's convenient. Might save some fingers. Fun to play with this light too.

dial type? i'll have to look that up. sears? easy to use? i must be the world's worst engine timer. Once again, I can get idle set like on my chevelle but if you dump on it it just pings away.
